Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- I’ve been reading points and miles blogs for years before I decided to start one with Sharon’s help. Over time, I got the sense that my sensibilities matched with those of Ed from Pizza in Motion. It helped that we both had a healthy love of Disney World. Reading his recent posts about how his family is dealing with COVID-19 just reinforced that fact. As a top-tier elite United member, it was a bit jarring, but not surprising, to read that he’s not planning to fly for the rest of 2020. Sharon and I have also adjusted our travel plans for the rest of the year, opting for road trips instead of flying.
- Thinking about getting a COVID test? Some places require them for you to visit unless you want to be quarantined for 14 days at your own expense. There are several tests out there and you need to know the differences. Here’s a good primer on the different types of tests and which one you may need to be able to travel. It also gives an idea of why the cheap, rapid tests might not be the secret formula to open up worldwide travel.
- What is it with cults and Hawaii? Several months ago we wrote about the cult that broke the Hawaiian quarantine rules. It turns out that wasn’t the only cult in Hawaii. Authorities have intercepted members of the “Love Has Won Cult” from Colorado who were trying to enter Maui. Locals apparently had problems with the cult leader claiming he was Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire.
- Airlines have been trying everything they can to prove to passengers that flying in the time of COVID-19 is safe. Well, at least some of them have been doing that. Delta, among others, have been limiting flight capacity and blocking the middle seats. Trying to give passengers even more comfort, Delta is also improving the filtering of the air on the jet bridge. I hate to tell airlines that no matter how sanitary they are, many people just don’t want to travel around other people and there’s no amount of precautions they can put into place to change that fact.
- I’ve held an account with Fidelity for years and have used their ATM card when traveling without having to pay any fees. This post shows why the Fidelity debit card is one of the best ones to use when traveling. We’ve used it Japan, on cruise ships and even at the worst ATMs in Europe and were reimbursed some of the worst access fees ever. That doesn’t mean we were able to avoid the horrible exchange rate but we needed cash and that was the only ATM in the area.
