Southwest Airlines is in the midst of its 50th Anniversary Celebration. They’ve been running a “Wanna Get Away” sweepstakes with the chance to win prizes every day until June 18th. I haven’t won anything in that contest (and the biggest prize I’ve heard of anyone winning is 100 Rapid Rewards points.)
However, another promotion is coming up where it’s easy for anyone who holds a Southwest co-brand credit card to earn an easy 5,000 miles worth around $65.
On one day only, June 11, 2021, Southwest will be paying out 50X points on the first $100 of Southwest purchases made with a co-brand Southwest credit card.
While this is great news if you’re looking to book a flight, we don’t need to make any Southwest reservations at the current time. However, we might use a Southwest flight later in the year once they extend the schedule.
Good thing that the following charges will count for the promotion:
- Flight bookings
- Inflight purchases
- Southwest gift cards
- Rapid Rewards Points Center
- Southwest Vacations packages
You’re saying that gift cards count for the promotion? That means if you buy a $100 gift card from Southwest with your co-brand card, you’ll earn 5,000 points.
If that’s a good deal, how can I make it even better? By combining it with my Southwest Priority co-brand card, of course. One of the benefits of the Southwest Priority card is a $75 yearly Southwest travel credit. While I usually don’t have a problem using this credit to pay for a flight on Southwest, I had little reason to use it over the past year. I was even resigned to let the credit expire. I didn’t think I could use the credit to buy a Southwest gift card. I blame this on the AMEX RAT who have trained me that gift cards are never eligible for anything.
However based on this post, purchasing a Southwest gift card will trigger the travel credit on the Southwest Priority card. If this is true, I can buy a $100 gift card from Southwest on 6/11 with my Priority card, earn 50X points, and then get a $75 credit.
One special thing about this for me is that my account renews in July. That means I’ll soon get another $75 credit to use in 2021-2022.
All I can say is that sometimes you have to work extra hard to maximize your credits and points multipliers and other times, they just fall into your lap.
