The World Naked Bike Ride Is Coming – Bring Your Bike (But Not Your Clothes)

by SharonKurheg

The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is an international clothing-optional event where participants plan, meet and ride together on human-powered transport (mainly bikes, but also skateboards, inline skates, rickshaws, etc.) to “deliver a vision of a cleaner, safer, body-positive world.”

Started in 2004, the World Naked Bike Ride saw events in 28 cities, in 10 countries on 4 continents and it’s since grown to 70 cities in 20 countries!

The goal of the WNBR is to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists and to decry society’s dependence on pollution-based transportation.

“Our message to the world is one of simplification, human harmony and love. For a future to exist for tomorrows generations, we have to stop wasting the life blood energy of the Earth, stop fighting and killing in the name of consumerist wealth accumulation and learn to love and respect all life on this planet.” – Conrad Schmidt, founder of The Work Less Party and Artists for Peace and WNBR and organizer for WNBR Vancouver, BC

There are generally two rides per year – March 9, 2019 was the date of the rides in the southern hemisphere and the northern hemisphere WNBR is June 8, 2019 (however some cities pick their own dates).

Rides in the U.S. will take place:

  • Boston, MA (July 20)
  • Chicago, IL (June 8)
  • Madison, WI (June 15)
  • Montpelier, VT (June 8)
  • New Orleans, LA (June 9)
  • Los Angeles, CA (June 22)
  • Philadelphia, PA (August 24)
  • Portland, OR (June 29)
  • St. Louis, MO (June 16)
  • San Francisco, CA (Apr. 20)

And these cities have not yet announced their dates: Austin TX, Bellingham WA, Bend OR, Berkeley CA, Buffalo NY, Columbus OH, Eugene OR, Houston TX, Las Vegas NV, New York NY, Phoenix AZ, San Diego CA & Seattle WA.

The event is clothing optional, so people go “as bare as they dare.” Some participants will have varying amounts of clothing on and others go for the body paint technique. And, of course, some will only wear a smile ;-).

People tend to be curious about riding their bicycle naked, so the WNBR has a FAQ on their website to answer peoples’ questions about how comfortable riding naked is, if it’s legal to ride naked, the cleanliness factor of riding naked, what to do about photographers at the event, etc.

Think you might be interested in riding? Or maybe being a spectator? WNBR’s website is WorldNakedBikeRide.org and the site should answer all the questions you may have (heads up that the website includes some pictures of naked people).
