Cell phone companies are always trying to prove why you should switch to them. Whether it’s a deal on certain phones, prices for specific plans, or technology one company offers that the others don’t, there’s almost always some reason why you may want to consider going from this provider to that one. A perfect example is when and why Joe and I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile, and it’s worked out great for us.
The “big four” mobile phone providers in the U.S. are AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. But did you that about 15 years ago, Disney threw its hat into the cell phone company ring, as well? The story behind it, as well as how and why it eventually failed is pretty interesting. Take a look…
I have to tell you that I was a pretty big fan of Disney in the early 2000s, yet I had never even heard of Disney Mobile. But with some modern-day research, I was able to find a few articles about it:
- PC World’s 2005 article of Disney’s plan to expand into the mobile phone market
- The Walt Disney Company’s 2006 press release about the program
- Disney’s 2006 ad for Disney Mobile service – phones were BOGOF!
- CNET’s 2007 article of when Disney Mobile stopped operations 18 months after it started
Frankly, even if I HAD heard of Disney Mobile back then, I question if I would have gotten it. By that point, I had already gone beyond typical flip phones and was using a Palm Treo. I was also an early adopter (and fangirl – don’t judge LOL) of the first iPhone so I suspect even if I had gotten a Disney Mobile phone, I would have switched services to get an iPhone ASAP.
