While I tend to be obsessive when it comes to making travel plans, that obsession is usually focused on the how and where. Meaning, I want to have the travel part of traveling (airplane, rental car or public transportation, and hotel) figured out and reserved. However when it comes to the actual plans of what we’re going to do when we get somewhere, I’m a little more relaxed. I like to be aware of what options are available but unless it’s something where we need to have a reservation or ticket in advance, I’m willing to let us make up our minds as we go along. That way we can just do what we want and not something that sounded great three months ago.
We had one full day to spend in Sedona, but besides knowing where we wanted to eat for dinner, we had no other plans. After grabbing our morning coffee, we walked down from our hotel, the Hyatt Piñon Pointe, to wander around the downtown area. The first place we came upon was the storefront of Pink Jeep Tours. If you’ve ever been to Sedona, you’ve seen the Pink Jeeps driving around. They’re everywhere. Sharon and I had the same thought at the same time, “Want to go for a ride in a Jeep?” That’s about as spur of the moment you can get for us. Because we waited until the last minute, some of the more popular trips were booked up but we were able to get a tour that was leaving in 90 minutes. That was enough time for us to look around a bit, catch a bathroom break and then be back in time to check in.

We were going on the Scenic Rim 2.0 tour. It’s not called 2.0 because it’s a new version but because of the two hour time of the trip. They also offer a 1.5 version along with a 3.0 version. I think the one we picked was just perfect, as 90 minutes wouldn’t be long enough to see many things and driving on the bumpy roads for three hours might be a bit much.
The tour takes you from the Pink Jeep depot in downtown Sedona and heads for Schnebly Hill Road. This is definitely an off road trip and is the type of terrain that Jeeps live for. You felt sorry when you saw someone who thought they would take their tiny rental car or their shiny Cadillac Escalade on the same journey. The Pink Jeeps are custom built for touring this terrain and with four other adult guests, we had plenty of room.
The moment you hit the off road portion of the tour, the scenery is amazing. We’ve visited Sedona before but getting out into the rock formations gives you a different perspective, where you gain respect for the magnificent beauty they possess. It also helped that we had a perfect day to take pictures.
Our driver was great, providing information about the area from local history to the geology of how the area was formed. He also slowed down at all of the good picture spots and made sure we all had our fill before moving on.
The destination of our trip was Merry Go Round or Carousel Rock. We got a really good view of it on the drive up.
The better view was when we got to the lookout and could see back down where we were coming from. We were given the opportunity to get out of the Jeep and walk around. It was nice to stretch our legs and not be constantly bouncing up and down. It also helps when you are looking at some of the most amazing scenery you’ve ever seen. Warning: viewing these pictures may cause booking a trip to Sedona to take a Pink Jeep ride.
Of course, Sharon couldn’t resist the opportunity to Photobomb the scenery. We stayed there as long as we wanted to. Our tour guide offered to take as many pictures of the group that we wanted and then it was back onto the Jeep for the ride back down to town.
It was a wonderful trip going with Pink Jeep Tours and if we return to Sedona, I’d definitely look to book one of their other trips. Looking at their website, there are 16 different options available. I’d like to go on the Broken Arrow tour just to show Sharon what her Purple JeepJeep that she drives around town is capable of doing.
Thanks to Pink Adventure Tours for the Pink Jeep pictures used in this article. It would be hard for me to take those considering that we were sitting inside the Jeep.
