These Town Names Sound NSFW, But They’re Really Not Naughty At All!

In an effort of full disclosure, please know there’s not one bad/dirty/NSFW word or phrase in this post. However there are some words that may or may have homonyms that might be a wee (or more than just a wee) bit suggestive, at least in the eyes of the beholder (that might be some of you, dear readers). That’s not our fault ;-). Your Mileage May Vary, and you have been warned. And now, on with the blog post…

Joe and I live in the United States so when we’ve read of or gone through towns with funny or suggestive names, they tend to be American. Beaverlick, Kentucky, for example. Screen Shot 2017-08-06 at 10.28.48 PMPussy Creek, Ohio. Dicktown, New Jersey. New Erection, Virginia. Meat Mountain, Alaska. Weiner, Arkansas. And heaven knows Pennsylvania certainly has more than its share, with Bird-In-Hand, Bareville, Intercourse, Lover, Mt. Joy, Climax, Virginville, Honey Pot, Jugtown, Fertility, Blue Ball, Balls Mills, Beaver, Big Beaver, Peach Bottom, Lititz (I had a friend who worked in Lititz, not far from the Wilbur Buds museum. She said SO many people who didn’t know better would call it “la’TITZ” instead of “LIH-titz”) Two Lick, Free Love Valley, Paradise, and so on. Even Scotrun PA, which doesn’t even have a suggestive homonym, always makes me smile because of the alternate word I ALWAYS see first.

But if you go out of the U.S., perhaps, let’s say, to the British Isles, the funny just gets funnier. So, Petrarch1603, a redditor on the subreddit r/MapPorn, took advantage of that and made a map of “Odd Places In The British Isles.” You can see the map here but make sure to click on the map to see the conversation that ensued, because it’s just as amusing (my favorite comments were, “What about Penistone and Twatt?,” and “…why is it no longer lllanfairpwllwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobyllllantysiliogogogoch?”)

So, yeah…there are lots of funny town names out there. Now it’s your turn. What odd/weird/funny town names have you heard of?

A tip of the hat and a THANK-YOU to K.O., of Lollipop Doll Shop for the heads up about this topic, and to Justin M., for the links to the history of those Lancaster PA towns!
