Sometimes bars just do things “right.” And if you’re a fan of Harry Potter, the Wizarding World and all it encompasses, there’s a bar (two, actually – they’ve expanded!) that’s perfect for you!
The Lockhart opened in Toronto in mid-2015. Now, I’ll give you that its nod to the Harry Potter empire is not the kind to knock you off your feet – I mean, it’s definitely not The Three Broomsticks, and they even describe themselves as an “apothecary cocktail bar that has been inspired by the magical world of Harry Potter.” However, although they don’t have Butter Beer on the menu, they do have “Better Beer,” along with concoctions such as the “Gin Weasley,” “The Befuddlement Draught,” “The Schacklebolt” and “Greenhouse #2.” Sharing plates include “Not-Every-Flavour Jelly Bean,” “House Made Chocolate Frog” and items from the Sweets Trolley. They also have a gin-based drink called “The Captain Picard” ??? I guess they wanted to go where no Muggle has gone before? Anyway, the full menu can be found here. But let’s face it…sometimes subtlety makes all the difference on the world when it comes to “in your face” versus knowing you got the joke that maybe not everyone got. But the references are definitely there. Some, like this, are just less obvious than others.

The Lockhart hold special events such as Magic Night, Brunch every Saturday and Sunday, and, not surprisingly, a monthly Harry Potter trivia night.
They are definitely doing well – apparently there are 2-hour waits to get into the establishment, and they expanded into Montreal in early 2017 and all signs suggest it’s doing just as well as its predecessor.
So whether you’re a a Wizard, a Muggle, a Witch or a NoMaj, if you’re ever in Toronto or Montreal and want to whet your whistle with some potions and elixirs, maybe look into The Lockhart and let us know what you think!
