Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Gary from View From The Wing wrote about the
sneakycreative ways the Andaz West Hollywood have found to make it difficult to redeem award nights. You can also read about the Andaz’s GM response to the criticism. We’ve stayed at the Andaz and while it was nice, if they don’t want my business then I’m perfectly fine not staying there again. - John from Loyalty Lobby wrote early in the week about reports claiming the Japan Airlines first class lounge in Tokyo was serving shark fin soup. In this instance, the airline’s head of global communications responded quickly and said the item has permanently been removed from the lounge menu.
- The music heard at theme parks help to set the mood of wherever you are and over the years there have been hundreds of recordings, both official and unofficial, of music from attractions, parades, shows and simple background music. Michael from Inside The Magic has given us some great audio memories from Disney and Universal parks on both coasts in a 2-part series. (Part 1) (Part 2).
- Matthew from Live and Let’s Fly wrote about his recent experience going through U.S. Immigration and Customs at San Francisco airport. If lines are always this long, wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to know the current wait time?
- Nick from Frequent Miler wrote about the sweet spots for using Citi ThankYou points. While Citi doesn’t partner with any of the major US airlines, that doesn’t mean the points are useless. By leveraging airline alliances and partnerships, it’s possible to book a flight to anywhere in the world with ThankYou points. In fact, I transferred Citi ThankYou points to Flying Blue and Singapore Airlines to book flights for our upcoming trip to Germany.
- Ben (Lucky) from One Mile at a Time wrote about the worst domestic flights based on departure times. While we thought airports aren’t open 24 hours a day, apparently some are with flights scheduled to leave after 2AM (cuz that’s when everyone wants to leave Niagara Falls to fly to Fort Lauderdale, right?)
- Here’s an article I found on iPhone Photography School’s website which explained a camera function I knew little about, HDR (High Dynamic Range). This feature uses different exposures of the same picture to form a single image. For example, when you’re taking a picture in front of a bright background, either the subject is too dark or the background is too light. HDR fixes that. This article tells you when to use HDR (and when not to) and how to fix the settings on your iPhone to make that happen.
- Ric from Loyalty Traveler wrote an interesting article about flight-shame or flygskam from its Swedish origin. Taking one’s contribution to fixing/harming the environment includes decisions made with regards to travel. Ric is making eco-friendly choices by using more fuel-efficient ground transport instead of flying during his next trip to Europe. Except when his choice was six days of travel or a two-hour flight. It’s not about avoiding air travel but making smart choices, taking the environmental impact into consideration
