Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Play Your Cards Right posted on Travel Update about a 150,000 Membership Rewards points sign-up bonus from American Express. What’s most surprising is which card they are promoting with this bonus (probably not the one you think). While that is a whole bunch of points, so is the massive minimum spend amount required to get the bonus.
- We visit New York City more than anywhere else and have a list of hotels we like. When we needed to stay near Grand Central, we picked the Fitzpatrick Grand Central, which was charming. I know Hyatt loyalists would have chosen the Grand Hyatt instead and those people were very disappointed when it was announced the hotel would close by the end of 2020 with plans for it to be torn down and replaced by a new, taller building. Well, there’s a reprieve as Points, Miles and Martinis reports the hotel will be staying open until at least the middle of 2022.
- When flying on a basic economy ticket, it’s essential to know exactly what’s included and what’s not. You don’t want to be like this passenger who found out the hard way when they got to the airport about all the luggage and seating restrictions in place on these tickets. However, Holly from Frugal Travel Guy recently flew on a basic economy ticket to Europe and says it’s wasn’t that bad.
- I thought for a minute that is was April Fool’s Day when I saw Gary’s post on View From The Wing saying he was excited about an upcoming flight on Spirit. It was no joke and he found a Spirit flight that was cheaper (even after adding in all the perks) and had a better schedule that American. We’ve found the same thing to be true with Frontier where we could get “The Works” package and still pay less than other airlines were charging for the same ticket.
- I’ve written about how airports were installing receptacles for you to pour out your water bottles before security so you can bring them to refill post-security. Steve from Travel Codex shares information about how Alaska Airlines is now promoting this option to their passengers through a #FillBeforeYouFly program. Now, they won’t fill your bottles on the plane, but Alaska’s terminal maps now show where the refilling stations are located. Not only will this reduce the number of plastic bottles used, but it will also reduce the weight of the plane as now Alaska can cater fewer water bottles for the flight and we know how airlines are all about reducing weight.
- There are more opinions about Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge than people who have visited the lands. I had my Star Wars geek driven review and Sharon wrote her thoughts as someone who is not really a fan. Shawn from Miles to Memories has an interesting post with several readers providing differing opinions of the new land and what he thinks the future may hold for this vast, and costly, expansion.
- Seth wrote on Paxex.aero about the saga surrounding the purchase of WOW Air from bankruptcy. After reading about how the airline plans on resuming operations and what they’ll do this time around differently, the only word I can think to describe it is, wait for it, WOW!
- Finally, I wanted to share an article from Ben at One Mile At A Time. His interactions with American Airlines agents at Dallas Airport reveals what may be the biggest problem at the airline and it goes way beyond a labor dispute or lousy seats on their planes. These agents also seemed to be stifled by the two words that are ruining the travel service industry.
