Happy Sunday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! What a year its been. Wait, all of these things have happened since last week?
Last week I wanted to keep from posting anything about COVID-19. That’s now nearly impossible as it is enveloping every area of our lives.
Since travel around the world is slowing down to a crawl, what’s a blogger to post about? Turns out, we’re a group that has plenty of opinions on what’s going to happen or how this is changing the current travel environment. Here are some of the most interesting ones I found in the past week.
- Matthew from Live and Let’s Fly wrote about the question we’re all asking. What’s going to happen to blogs about points and miles if no one’s going anywhere? I guess it depends on the website. For us, this is something we do because we like doing it. It gives us a creative outlet. I’ve also said there are things I will not do for the website and they have not changed an iota.
- Nick wrote on Frequent Miler about how your strategies might need to shift in this new environment. Some bonuses that may have seemed insignificant in the past might now be a good deal. Do you have a Citi Double Cash card?
- John from Loyalty Lobby reminds everyone to look at their travel subscriptions. Are you paying GoGo for monthly access? What good is that if you’re not flying? Time to cancel until you’re flying again. Fortunately, my only subscription was with TripIt Pro, and they’ve extended all accounts by six months.
- Steve wrote on Travel Codex asking if many airlines could go bankrupt in 2020. He lists the many problems currently facing the industry and his opinion that this will be far worse than 9/11 is one that I totally agree with.
- Brian from The Gate shared information about how rental car companies are waving the young driver fee since so many college students need to get home because their school is closed for the rest of the semester. Now we’ll see if they’ll change the rules for people too old to rent a car now that they’re not supposed to fly due to the increased health risk.
- The Points Pundit asks if social distancing will be what destroys the travel industry. I’m not going to go that far, but I do think we need to make changes to how we interact and if I never shake another hand, I’m fine with that.
- Gilbert from God Save the Points brings a positive spin to the decrease in worldwide tourism. Some of the locations damaged the most by overcrowing are getting a chance to recover. While many of these places were already asking (or forcing) people not to come, I doubt they planned for the dramatic drop of tourists.
- Gary on View from the Wing wrote a very insightful post with 7 reasons we won’t be getting back to normal anytime soon. It’s a sobering, but honest, breakdown of how things will not be the same after the coronavirus. Just as things weren’t the same after every previous major event in history.
- Chris from Rene’s Points has the final spot this week asking an important question. After the coronavirus scare is done, will we continue our travel hygiene protocols, or will we revert back to our old habits? Let’s be honest, if people were using hand sanitizer before, why is everyone rushing to buy it now? What about how we have to teach adults the proper way to wash their hands. If we want to survive, let us hope that people will continue to use soap and water when the hype is done.
Until next week. #Stayathome #Washyourhands
