Our Discover card offers 5% back on purchases in specific categories that rotate every 3 months. We maxed out the January-March benefit, which means we earned $75 without even trying.
Typically I’ll use my Discover in the bonus categories but not nearly spending the $1,500 required to earn the $75. This time around, the bonus categories for the past three months couldn’t have been any better.
For the last 3 months, Discover has paid 5% back on charges made at Grocery Stores, Walgreens and CVS. A nice thing Discover does is give you a tracker to keep up on how much you’ve earned.
Between going to Walgreens to stock up on medicines and personal hygiene products and our trips to the grocery stores to buy enough food for the next 7-10 days each time, we easily spent $1,500 in just the last 45 days. Not going out to eat even a few times a week makes a big difference in your grocery tab.
Starting on April 1, the new categories take effect and I think that they’ll be just as easy to use for some shoppers.
The first two categories (Gas Stations and Uber/Lyft) aren’t that exciting. I’m not driving around much because I’m doing my part to #stayhealthy by listening to the doctors and #stayathome. Even for my necessary trips, gas prices have gone down so much that I’m not spending as much when I need to fill the tank. Uber/Lyft? I don’t see any trips on the horizon when we’d be needing that service.
But I sure could put a dent in that $1,500 category max with charges made at Wholesale Clubs. You can use your Discover card at Sam’s Club and BJ’s, but Costco only accepts Visa cards in their clubs. However, you can use Visa, Mastercard or Discover cards when making purchases at Costco.com
If you have a Discover card, you can sign up for the 2nd quarter bonus categories by logging into your account and clicking on the link from the home page.
You don’t earn any bonus cash if you don’t register. So if you have a Discover card, take 30 seconds to register and don’t forget to use your card to earn 5% back at Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft and Wholesale Clubs for the next 3 months.
