When coronavirus started having an impact on travel, airlines were cancelling flights left and right. And frankly, what airlines didn’t cancel, passengers did.
Different airlines have handled the changes differently. Some offered refunds, some offered vouchers. Some who initially only offered vouchers now have to offer refunds, as per the DOT (H/T: Gary Leff).
So what’s Delta’s response? They up the ante with how long their vouchers are good for.
From Delta’s website:
So now, if you elect to get a voucher and let Delta keep the money for your ticket(s) (because they really, REALLY want to hold onto your money), they’ll let you take 2 years to re-book, instead of just one.
If you bought/buy tickets between March 1 and May 31, 2020 and need to cancel, they can be changed without a change fee for up to 1 year fro the date of purchase, same as always.
BUT!:
Tickets normally expire one year after purchase, but we’re providing waived change fees and greater flexibility to travel through May 31, 2022, for customers who:

Have upcoming travel already booked in April or May 2020 as of April 3, 2020

Have existing eCredits or canceled travel from flights in March, April or May 2020
As of this writing, American and United are still offering only 1 year to re-book, if you decide to go with a voucher instead of a refund.
