The Adult Entertainment Industry Is Thinking Outside The Box Due To COVID-19

a car parked on the side of a street

It doesn’t matter what’s happening in the world, whether you’re traveling or staying home, human sexuality is always there. From memes about babies with names like “Quarantina” who will be born 9 months from now, to over TWO AND A QUARTER BILLION hits if you Google CORONAVIRUS and SEX, it’s just a given that, despite it all, sex will always be there.

The owners of establishments that cater to adults know this. Both travelers and locals flock to these places – adult book & video stores, strip clubs, gay bars, you name it. So when, city by city, storefronts have had to close in the name of social distancing and safety, these are the places that started thinking, if you’ll excuse the expression, outside the box. Some have worked, some haven’t. Whatever the case, I appreciate their ingenuity….

Magic City, Atlanta

Virtual Lapdances

Open since 1985, Magic City is considered by some to be one of the most well known strip club in the country. However in mid-March they closed their doors in an abundance of caution. Daryl Mapp, Magic City’s Director of Branding said: “Our Mayor has taken decisive action and while we could have taken other measures such as limiting guests to under 250, we believed that this was the most prudent course to support her leadership and protect the city we love.”

But you can’t keep a good strip club down. A few days later, it was reported in the Atlanta Jounal-Constitution that Magic City was going to offer “virtual lap dances.”

Would-be clubgoers will be able to visit magiccitylive.com, pay a certain amount per month to register and have access to live and pre-recorded video, as per Mapp. All of Magic City’s dancers would be available to talk with clients and, of course, accept tips.

For now, it looks like Magic City is still working out the kinks, as their website says:

Based on overwhelming support and feedback we are working on a new system to better serve our dancers and customers.

We appreciate your patience and the amazing response! Updates will be posted as they become available.

But hopefully it will be up soon.

Little Darlings, Las Vegas

Drive-up strip shows

When the governor of Las Vegas announced a 30-day shutdown of Sin City on March 18th to help flatten the curve of coronavirus, a strip club called Little Darlings decided they would keep doing what they do best and just adapt it for social distancing.

“We’re going to offer drive-up window strip shows,” Ryan Carlson, director of operations for Little Darlings, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “Guests can drive up to the front door and we’re going to have dancers separated by the 6-foot separation rule and they can enjoy a totally nude show right from the seat of their car.”

The 10 minute drive-up shows were supposed to start on Mach 21 and would run $100 per patron, and tips were encouraged.

However the governor’s orders on March 20 were for a mandatory shutdown of most nonessential businesses and with that, Little Darling’s plans shriveled. A local news channel reported there’s a sign on Little Darlings’ front door that says they’re closed until further notice.

Pornhub, Worldwide

Always looking for a marketing opportunity, Pornhub (it’s like YouTube, but with adult content. Very adult content) originally was offering free premium service in Italy, Spain and France while their citizens were on lockdown. The adult video site is now extending the offer of free select premium content worldwide, through April 23rd.

Says Corey Price, the company’s Vice President:

With nearly one billion people in lockdown across the world because of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s important that we lend a hand and provide them with an enjoyable way to pass the time. We hope by expanding our offer of free Pornhub Premium worldwide, people have an extra incentive to stay home and flatten the curve.

Lend a hand, indeed.

Green Door Video & Adult Boutique, West Peoria

Curbside delivery

The New York Daily News reported that the Green Door, which sells, among other things, porn flicks and sex toys, planned to offer curbside service after they were deemed to not be an essential service.

Yeah, that didn’t work out.

Apparently a local resident told the police, who stopped by for a visit. They explained that just because restaurants can offer take out, sex shops cannot. So they voluntarily shut down indefinitely.

But all is not lost! On March, 31, The Green Door wrote on its Facebook page that they had coordinated with an associate store out of KY, who could ship.

Drag Shows Go Online

Gay bars, like non-gay bars across the country, are being forced to temporarily close, or at least only be available for food (and, in some states, beverage) curbside takeout service. That’s fine for the food and drink point of view, but for the entertainment that frequently happens inside gay bars? Not so much. So lots of drag queens are putting their shows online. Rolling Stone has a really good (heads up: and NSFW – adult language) article that goes into detail about the industry and what’s out there.
