Citi Makes It Easier To Use The Prestige’s Travel Credit

by joeheg

The Citi Prestige isn’t the card it once was. It used to have great benefits, which were subsequently devalued or entirely eliminated. Citi then added some tremendous earning bonus categories for dining and air travel but then removed all of the travel insurance benefits. So now you’re left with a card charging $495 a year that’s great to use at restaurants. At least you get a $250 travel credit which is generally easy to use. That is, until now. I have minimal travel expenses and even less that I’d want to put on a card with no trip cancellation insurance.

Citi is doing something to help out cardholders who want to use their credits for current expenses. For most people, that means restaurants and supermarkets. I received an email from Citi today that explained the expanded benefit.

Between May 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020, in addition to Travel purchases, purchases made with your Citi Prestige Card at Supermarkets and Restaurants (including takeout) will also count toward this Expanded $250 Travel Credit benefit in 2020.

This benefit started on May 1, 2020, but I didn’t write about it because there wasn’t any official link. Websites like Frequent Miler received the info from Citi’s PR team and shared it. I’m way too cautious, and unless I have something in writing, I’m not taking a bank’s word for anything.

Now that I finally got an email from Citi, I plan on cashing out my travel credit for our dining expenses. For supermarket shopping, I’m going to keep using my Chase Sapphire Reserve during May and June. That’s because Chase is currently paying 5x Ultimate Rewards points for money spent at the supermarket.

I’ll typically use travel credits from my premium credit cards before the first statement closes. This Citi credit has been sitting there for five months, which is about 4 & 1/2 months too many.

Prestige-less credit card with even worse service from Thank You Points travel provider cxLoyalty. Weeks after cancellation with no refund and hours on unanswered phones. No longer worth the fees, they’ve kissed off my renewal.
