Watching Delta’s schedule changes every month, during- and post-COVID, has been like watching us emerge from a cocoon. April’s schedule was pretty bare, but May’s was better (albeit with some tweaks), and their schedule for June was even better still.
But y’all, July almost sounds like they’re becoming normal again. Well, emphasis on “almost.”
Delta will be adding almost 1,000 flights in July. Granted, their domestic schedule will be about 65% smaller than a year ago and their international schedule will be almost 75% smaller than what it was pre-COVID. But when you consider that their international flight schedule in April was less than 20 routes total, May had less than 35 and June had just over 50, even 25% of the norm is something to crow about.
In fact, Delta’s schedule is large enough for July that they’re not even individually listing each route anymore! Here’s the rundown of what to expect:
U.S. DOMESTIC & CANADA
Domestically, Delta is adding more nonstop service between top markets. Major hubs still take priority so there are more flights in/out of Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City, but they’re also returning flights to leisure markets such as Florida and along the West Coast.
The border between the U.S. Canada remains closed through at least July 21 (although there is that loophole), so flights between the two countries are limited, for those with critical travel needs. But Minneapolis, Detroit and New York-JFK do have some flights to destinations such as Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Winnipeg. Delta is also continuing its service to Vancouver from Seattle.
LATIN AMERICA & CARIBBEAN
In June, Delta’s flights to/from the Latin region was about 10% of normal due to travel restrictions. With borders reopened, their flights to/from the area will increase to about 25% of the norm.
They’ll have specific focus on leisure and vacation locations, so they will re-introduce flights to destinations such as Cancun and markets like Los Cabos, Montego Bay, Nassau, St. Thomas and Punta Cana.
In South America, Delta will resume service from Atlanta to São Paulo, as well as previously suspended routes in Central America and the Caribbean like Aruba, St. Maarten and Costa Rica.
TRANS-ATLANTIC
Delta plans on resuming service from New York-JFK to Lisbon (4x per week) and daily service from JFK to Athens, pending a lift on border restrictions. They’re also planning to add service from Boston to Amsterdam four times per week, and daily service from Seattle to Amsterdam. They’re also going to restart service between Detroit and Paris-Charles De Gaulle.
Pending government approval, delta will also reintroduce service from New York-JFK to Accra, as well as from Atlanta to Lagos.
TRANS-PACIFIC
This is probably the most exciting for a bunch of people.
Weekly service from L.A. to Sydney will begin in July. Of course, Australia’s borders for leisure travel will remain closed for quite some time but if you *have* to get to Oz, and are willing to do the quarantine time (even though you may have to pay for it yourself, depending), at least there will be flights to/from Sydney again.
Service between Seattle and Shanghai-Pudong via Seoul-Incheon will actually begin in late June (on the 25th), and will operate twice per week. From July onward, Delta will also offer flights from Seattle and Detroit to Shanghai-Pudong, also via Incheon, once a week.
Even if Delta’s schedule isn’t even close to normal, it’s the closest to normal than we’ve seen since very early in the year. For those who are willing to fly, it must be a beautiful sight to see!
