American Express has launched several promotions on its Marriott co-brand cards to keep them relevant during the coronavirus pandemic. The first offers were designed to capture spending in the new hot categories, like earning 6X Bonvoy points on grocery spending that ran through July 31st.
No matter what you think about how the U.S. is handling COVID-19, there’s no arguing that people are no longer staying at home all the time like they did in March and April. They’re looking for socially distanced travel locations (meaning they’re going on road trips and staying at hotels.) They’re also going to restaurants more, either getting take-out or dining at establishments with adapted seating arrangements (increased spacing or outside) when at home and on the road.
This means that grocery spending, while still much higher than usual, is not the only expense anymore. Taking this into account, American Express just launched a new promotion for the Marriott Bonvoy co-branded cards offering 10X points for spending at Marriott Bonvoy hotels, U.S. gas stations and restaurants. All of these offers run through October 31st and each category is capped at $7,500.
I have these offers on both the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and the discontinued Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. I’m not sure about the Bonvoy Business card but I’d check if you have one of those. The number of bonus points offered in each category will vary depending on what the card typically earns but all offers will end up totaling 10X.
If you often eat at local restaurants and loaded the Shop Small offer to your Bonvoy card, you should be able to get the $5 credit when spending over $10 and the 10X points, which is an excellent double-dip opportunity.
Right now, my best offer for gas stations is earning 3X ThankYou points with my Citi Premier. I’ll shift those charges to my Bonvoy AMEX card.
