I Screwed Up My First Worthwhile Chase Offer. Where Are My AMEX Offers?

While I hope most of you are aware that one of the best things about having an American Express card is the ability to earn a ton of miles or cash back through AMEX Offers. I earned $35 back from the most recent “Shop Small” offer. I’m a bit ashamed that I didn’t shop locally often enough to max out this money maker easily.

I’m always on the lookout for AMEX Offers but when a competitor came out with a similar offer, I mostly gave them a pass. In July, I wrote about how I had stopped paying attention to Chase Offers. The number of points available and the rules about earning them just made it not worthwhile to chase a few dollars. Get it, Chase dollars. Whatever.

So imagine my surprise when I logged into my Chase account and saw a multitude of offers for my Sapphire Reserve card.

A frustrating thing about Chase Offers is that in order to read the details of the offer, you need to click on the box and doing so enrolls that card. I checked my other cards and none of the other ones showed the 10% back offer at Lowe’s.

I was about to go shopping to buy some much-needed landscape supplies for areas of our lawn that decided to die suddenly. I bought what I thought I needed and paid with my Sapphire Reserve to earn 10% back.

With AMEX Offers, I get an email immediately after I make a qualified purchase. No such luck with Chase. It’s a day later and I still don’t even see the charge as pending on my account.

Even worse is that I didn’t plan my purchase and had to return later in the day for more supplies. According to the terms, I’m out of luck because the offer is good for one use only. If you don’t max it out by spending $130 on your first purchase, too bad.

This is the first time I ever tried to use a Chase Offer. While I’m at it, I’ll load my Starbucks card with my Sapphire Reserve because earning 10% back and 3x points per dollar is better than the return I’m currently getting with my Citi Prestige.

What do you think about Chase Offers? Has anyone earned any reward worth the effort?
