One of the favorite resorts for Starwood loyalists in the Florida Keys was the Westin Key West. The hotel is situated on the best real estate in Key West, located adjacent to Mallory Square. It features the closest bar for those wishing to spend the evening watching the sunset.
The 178 room resort hotel and the adjacent Sunset Key, home to luxury cottages and the exclusive Latitudes restaurant, left the Starwood brand in 2017 when it became a Margaritaville resort.
It seemed like a match made in heaven. A Margaritaville hotel in the town where the whole brand started with a single retail store in 1985. But it turned out that people don’t really need an island fix when they’re already in the islands.
After only four years, the property has changed hands once again and is now a part of the Opal Collection.
This is a change in direction for the resort. While the original Westin flag indicated a higher standard for the hotel, the Margaritaville brand has more of a party atmosphere associated with it.
Going back to a higher-end brand like Opal Resorts fits more with the hotel’s luxury theme and especially with the Sunset Key Cottages. Hopefully, the new owners will spend some money to bring the marina hotel back to the standards it deserves.
It’s just a pity we’re no longer able to use Marriott Bonvoy points to stay there, like when it was a Westin hotel.
