A third island in the Caribbean has determined that the best way to keep its residents safe from coronavirus is only to allow tourists who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to visit.
Effective June 9th, Saint-Barthélemy, also called Saint Bart’s, an island of the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean Sea, reopened to tourism, but only to fully vaccinated travelers, including those from the U.S.
Of course, as an overseas collectivity of France since 2007, the decision was made in combination with the “mère patrie” (mother country) that the island would only allow visitors who had received their COVID vaccine. But it’s probably the wisest decision.
This is the third Caribbean island to announce they will only welcome vaccinated visitors. St.Kitts and Nevis, as well as Anguilla, recently made similar announcements.
Those to visit St. Bart’s will need to show proof of a negative PCR test administered within three days of arrival or an antigen test taken 48 hours prior to arrival, along with proof of vaccination.
Travelers under 18 will not have to show proof of vaccination, and visitors under 10 will not be subject to testing.
France’s other territories in the Caribbean, Saint Martin, Guadeloupe and Martinique, have different rules regarding U.S. visitors. The latter two are not allowing any tourists from the United States, regardless of vaccine status. Saint Martin allows both vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors from the U.S., provided they submit proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within five days of arrival or an FDA-approved rapid antigen test taken within 48 hours of departure.
Like St. Bart’s, France itself opened to vaccinated U.S. tourists on June 9th.
