Is This The World’s Best Mac & Cheese?

by joeheg

New York City is the capital of places saying that they have the “World’s Best” of everything. Pizza, hot dogs, bagels, Chinese food are all better in New York. Even the tap water is wonderful.

So I was pleasantly surprised to accidentally show up at the place that serves the “World’s Best Mac & Cheese.”

While waiting for our number to come up for entry into the Harry Potter Store NYC, I checked on Yelp for a nearby spot where we could grab a drink and get away from the NYC summer heat. There was a highly rated place called “The Cellar,” which was only 2 blocks away. We headed there but when we arrived, I didn’t see the entrance.

What I did see was the entrance to a store I didn’t know had a location in Manhattan. Beecher’s Handmade Cheese.

I was introduced to Beecher’s during a food tour of Pike Place Market in Seattle. We got to sample the different cheeses and the finale was a sample of the Mac & Cheese.

It turns out that “The Cellar” is the bar/restaurant located on the basement level of the NYC location of Beecher’s Handmade Cheese located at 900 Broadway, New York, NY 10003.

We headed downstairs and ordered some drinks from the happy hour menu. I couldn’t resist ordering the mac & cheese. I scarfed down 3 or four of the little servings in Seattle. I usually find mac & cheese to be disappointing and prefer the Kraft version to many “fancy” versions (Hush. that’s why the blog is called Your Mileage May Vary). Beecher’s is an exception.

Made with penne noodles and a mixture of Beecher’s Flagship and Just Jack cheeses, the creamy concoction is unlike most versions which are either too dry or stuffed full of extras that only detract from the stars.

Beecher’s Mac & Cheese is a showcase for the cheese and the penne pasta works well to capture the gooey goodness.

If you’re ever in the Flatiron District of New York and want to try some great cheese, stop by Beecher’s. No matter if you’re getting some cheese to go, eating at the upstairs cafe, or heading down to “The Cellar” for some drinks, it’s a worthwhile place to visit.
