There are many road warriors who spend days, weeks or even months at a time away from their partners. They’ve done the best they can to adjust to an imperfect situation. This could mean trying to get an earlier flight home on Friday to have a few more hours at home before flying back out on Sunday night.
However, it’s also difficult for couples who spend all of their nights together to adjust to a single night of being alone. Sure it sounds good to be able to watch whichever movie you want or turn your favorite album up to 11, but there’s something about sleeping in an empty bed.
Sharon and I fall somewhere in the middle of this dynamic. While we’re fortunate that I have a job that allows me to stay home, I’ve occasionally had to go on business trips. Sure, Sharon managed to surprise me and fly up for a few nights., but that’s an extreme way to show that anything is possible with enough travel knowledge and some great friends.
There have also been times when one of us wants to go on a trip and the other one doesn’t. For example, I drove down to South Florida to see a Hootie and the Blowfish concert and stayed overnight. Sharon’s also stayed for several nights in Cape Canaveral before going on her early morning fishing trips. These are just single nights so it’s not a huge inconvenience.
However, Sharon managed to do a small thing to show me that she appreciated me letting her go on her overnight trips. She brought me a bar of soap from the Home2 Suites and left it on my desk.
I haven’t needed to purchase a bar of soap for the past 10 years. In fact, I even played a game during the pandemic called “Where’s this toiletry from?”
This was the smallest act of kindness but it meant a lot to me. We both have our own personalities. As long as she keeps letting me apply for credit card bonuses and occasionally dealing with my travel quirks, I’ll keep booking rooms at places like the Goldener Hirsch and the Grand Hyatt Kauai.
