Citi No Longer Allows Product Changes By Chat

Citi, by far, has one of the most lenient product change policies of any bank. If you have a Citi card, you’re more likely than not going to be able to change that card to any other Citi card.

Have an American Airlines card but want a Rewards+ card? No problem.

The ability to change cards outside of product lines is almost unheard of with other banks. You’re not going to be able to change your AMEX Green Card to a Delta AMEX Gold Card.

There are pros and cons of doing product changes with Citi, most of which have to do with the bank’s unique sign-up bonus rules.

Those things aside, if you wanted to change from one Citi card to another before 2020, you’d have to call Citi Customer Service. Because of the pandemic (probably causing a limited number of people working the call centers around the world), Citi started letting customers ask for product changes using the online chat function.

Apparently, this was only temporary and you’ll again need to call Citi to do a product change. I’ve read several comments saying that if you contact Citi by chat the rep will tell you to call and that’s exactly what happened when I tried to product change via chat.

I searched around to see if anyone was recently able to product change by chat but wasn’t able to find one from the past several months.

With limited data points online and my personal experience, I’m going to take a chance and say that Citi product change via chat is done but if anyone has had success recently, please let me know in the comments.

It’s not all bad because my phone call to do a product change was only 10 minutes, and that’s with having to go through an exceedingly long phone tree, talk to one rep and get transferred to a specialist to complete the process.

I realize that some people (well most people) would rather get things done without a phone call. At least on this one I spoke to knowledgeable people who helped me achieve my goal in a limited amount of time. I’ll take that as a win.
