10 Things You Do On Vacation That You Probably Don’t Do Any Other Time

by SharonKurheg

When you’re on vacation, it’s that special time when life is just…different. Some of the rules don’t apply. Well, for some people they still might ;-). But for the most part, there seem to be things you do on vacation that, well, even if you don’t do them all the time, you certainly don’t do them nearly as often. Like these…

1. Lose track of what day it is

Crap, is today Wednesday? Thursday? Without the typical things in life that help you subconsciously keep track of the time (work, church services, trash pickup, etc.), it suddenly becomes more difficult to “just know” what day of the week it is.

2. Not keep up-to-date with news

I can’t remember the last time Joe and I kept the TV on in our hotel room when we’re out of town. You’re also so busy during the day that you might not even check Facebook or your online news outlets (but as long as you keep reading Your Mileage May Vary, even when you’re out of town, it’s all good). Besides, you can always catch up with the news when you get back home.

3. Drink cocktails before noon

Maybe you do drink a properly chilled adult beverage before noon in your real life…and there’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s what you like to do – no judging here! For the rest of us though, a Mai Tai is usually not a 10am beverage. But when you’re on vacation, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” so drink up!

4. Not go to the gym

If you take care of yourself and work out regularly when you’re home, you may still not do that when you’re on vacation. It’s all good though because you’re probably walking much more than you usually do, anyway…and that still counts as exercise ;-).

5. Nap in the afternoon

nap

Who knew that the things little kids fight against are the things their grown-up selves treasure. You stayed out late the night before, already had a big day today, and the day is barely half over! Heck yeah, you’re gonna nap! And your grown-up self is gonna LIKE IT, too!

6. Get lost – a lot!

Granted, with apps like Waze and Google Maps, it’s not as easy to get lost as it used to be. But if you’re in an unfamiliar place and don’t have data or Wi-Fi, it’s still possible to be looking for one place and wind up somewhere entirely different. Which isn’t always such a bad thing…

7. Eat two full dinners

Some people are big eaters and their lunch is as big as their dinner. For others, not so much. But when everything on the menu sounds SO GOOD, you can easily wind up with an appetizer, main course and dessert twice in the same day. Oh well…back to the gym when you get home, right?

8. Speak a different language

Joe and I live in Florida, a state with a relatively high percentage of Latin-Americans, so we know a lot of bilingual people. But in other states, that’s not always the case. After studying your basic Japanese or Russian, or trying to remember the French you learned in high school, it’s kind of fun to speak your “new” language around people who will understand you, especially since you never use it at home.

9. Act like a local

If you’ve been visiting somewhere for a long time, or go to the same location on a regular basis, you sometimes start to know a place well enough to be able to give directions and advice (it happens a lot when uber Disney fans are walking around the parks). It’s kind of a good feeling to think that people think you live there ;-).

10. Eat ice cream for breakfast

Because why the hell not? You’re on VACATION! 😉 Besides, it’s got dairy and carbs, and carbs give you energy, right?

What other things can you think of that you do on vacation but not at home?
