I Just Learned This Trick For The Citi Premier Card

by joeheg

I think the Citi Premier card is one of the best standalone products that earn transferrable points. In my opinion, it’s the unappreciated hero of the Thank You program.

While I thought I knew everything I could about the Citi Premier, even I didn’t know this hidden perk.

The Citi Premier card earns bonus points for gasoline purchases at wholesale clubs.

BJ’s Wholesale Club is the closest discount club location to our house. We had a Costco nearby but they turned that into a business location, so for several years, we went without any membership. Recently, I got a discounted price to join BJs, so we joined last year. In addition to the reduced prices at the club, we fuel up at BJ’s Gas whenever we’re there since the price is 10-15 cents per gallon less than nearby stations.

Since we’re not trying to reach any signup bonus at the time, I gave Sharon the Citi Premier to use for everyday expenses, since most of her charges are at supermarkets and gas stations.

I didn’t think she’d fill up her purple Jeep at the local BJ’s.

I wasn’t upset at her saving money on gas but I was shocked that she earned 3X Thank you points for the purchase.

So while purchases at wholesale clubs don’t count as supermarkets, purchases at their gas stations code as fuel for the bonus miles.

While I’m not going to use this knowledge to rack up miles, I am going to use the card which earns the most points at gas stations when filling up at BJ’s Gas.

Small wins are often the most satisfying.

It’s not surprising because I discovered it when I opened a Costco membership about 6 years ago and opened the anywhere Visa card on the same day and used it at any gas station outside of Costco, including other wholesale clubs’ gas stations.
