Flight Review: Singapore Economy 737 MAX8 REP-SIN

by joeheg

The final stop of our tour of Southeast Asia was Siem Reap, Cambodia. I found award space on Singapore Airlines business class to the US but couldn’t add the first leg from REP to the ticket because there was no business class award space and I wanted a 26-hour stop in Singapore. I needed a positioning flight. (I’ve since heard that you cannot book a split-cabin award with Singapore Airlines online, but it may be possible if you call. I wouldn’t have helped in my case anyway.) I used 8,000 Aeroplan miles plus 78.10 CAD for each ticket.

Departing from Siem Reap airport was chaotic as there were no announcements so passengers just started to line up when we felt it was the time to do so.

Once onboard we headed to our seats at the back of the plane. These were the only seats available when I went online. I’m not sure if that’s because I booked with Aeroplan or not.

Once everyone was settled, they played the safety video.

The seats on Singapore Airlines 737 MAX are comfortable with decent legroom.

Each seat has a TV screen featuring the KrisWorld entertainment package. There’s also a USB charging port and a headphone jack.

The seat itself was fine, but the padding was not great. It’s OK for a 2-hour flight like this one but I know I’d be having back issues if I had to sit for 3-4 hours.

The cabin crew efficiently worked to distribute the meals to passengers. I was impressed that Singapore serves hot meals to all passengers on a 2-hour flight.

By the time they got to us the only option available was the fish noodles served in Singapore’s sustainable packaging. It was messy to eat for someone inexperienced with using a wooden fork to eat noodles and sauce from a box.

I had a few bites, but after dripping some sauce on my shirt, I decided to pass on the rest of the meal.

Once the meal was cleaned away, I watched part of a movie on the KrisWorld IFE. I wasn’t worried about not finishing as I could pick up where I left off on our next flight.

At this point, we’d flown on three different configurations of Singapore Airlines planes and each experience was great. If I get the opportunity, I will book with them again in a second, even if it means flying in economy class.
