Restaurant Review: Blue Duck Tavern – Park Hyatt Washington DC

by joeheg

The Blue Duck Tavern is located in the Park Hyatt Washington DC. We dined here when we previously stayed at the Park Hyatt. It’s a popular spot for visitors and locals and has won numerous accolades from Michelin, Zagat and the Washington Post.

We had our previous meal in the restaurant. The dining room is spread over the ground floor with several different dining areas.

We weren’t planning to eat here on this trip and didn’t have reservations. Fortunately, we were able to snag some seats at the bar of the Blue Duck Lounge.

We were cold and wet, as it was rainy and windy all day. We treated ourselves to some drinks. At this point, we weren’t sure if we’d stay for dinner.

We started to get hungry as we dried off and warmed up, so we asked for a menu.

We ordered two main dishes and two sides. The food pictures aren’t the best, as the lighting was tricky at the bar.

Roasted Rohan Duck Breast

We ordered too much food and probably could have done without the pasta dish. However, the cavatelli was really good so I’m glad we got it even if we couldn’t finish everything.

I ordered the crab cakes, which were all crab with almost no fillers. Literally, it was a cake of crab meat. Sharon had the duck. (If there’s duck on the menu she will order it.) (Note from Sharon: true story! I LOVE duck!) While the dish is called duck breast, it also comes with a leg and there was plenty of duck in that pan.

We were too full to try for a dessert so I asked the bartender for the check. He asked if we were staying at the hotel. I said we weren’t but inquired if I could add my World of Hyatt number to the bill. For the first time ever, I found someone at a Hyatt restaurant who knew what I was talking about (as opposed to this Hyatt restaurant. Sigh.). Since I was paying with my Hyatt Visa card, my member number was on the back.

As I took the check, he thanked me for being an Explorist member. (Thanks Bilt Rewards!)

Final Thought

The food and drinks at Blue Duck Tavern were as good as we remembered. We weren’t planning to visit because the Park Hyatt is out of the way. It just happened we were near a Metro stop and it’s a 10-minute walk from the Foggy Bottom station to the Park Hyatt.

Since we’d already been there, we didn’t mind eating at the bar as a walk-in. However, if you spend that much on dinner, try to make a reservation for a table in the restaurant. Not to take anything away from the bar staff. They did a great job mixing drinks while serving food (over 1/2 of the people at the bar were also having dinner). It’s more the food we ate wasn’t bar food and you should get the whole experience at least once.

Many meals there as well as a “seat” at the bar. Glad to hear it’s unchanged.
