IHG Now Offers Automatic Wi-Fi Connection At Over 5,000 Hotels

by joeheg

When it comes to offering Wi-FI to guests, IHG hotels have led the way. Back in 2014, IHG provided free Wi-Fi to all reward members, regardless of whether or not they were registered guests. To access the network, all you needed was to enter your IHG loyalty number.

Many hotel chains now offer free Wi-Fi to members, but only during a hotel stay. Marriott & Hilton require booking through their channels to get free Wi-Fi. Hyatt offers Wi-Fi to all guests. Amazingly, many luxury hotel chains still charge for Wi-Fi (Here’s why they can get away with this practice).

IHG is taking the next step with its Wi-Fi by offering an automatic connection to a hotel’s Wi-Fi network.

IHG Wi-Fi Auto Connect

IHG’s new service will automatically connect a mobile device to the IHG network without entering your information. Here’s how it’s described in the IHG press release.

A first-of-its-kind innovation available at scale in hotels, this feature is now available exclusively in the IHG One Rewards mobile app for both iOS and Android users and will automatically connect IHG One Rewards members to Wi-Fi upon arrival at more than 5,000 IHG hotels worldwide – no separate passwords or logins needed!

You have to do some digging to find where to turn on the service in the IHG App. Here’s the path for iPhone users as of the writing of this post.

  • Go to the ACCOUNT tab at the bottom
  • Go to MANAGE PROFILE
  • Scroll to Wi-FI Auto Connect
  • ENABLE Wi-FI Auto Connect

The auto-connect service only works with mobile devices. You still have to log into the network if using a laptop. I haven’t been to an IHG hotel since the service started, so I can’t say how reliable it is to get you online.

I’d guess you must be logged into your IHG One Rewards account on the app for this function to work. So now is a good time to ensure your account information is current.
