Over the past few years, luxury hotels have undergone significant renovation projects, which some attribute to the decrease in international travel and subsequent demand for luxurious accommodations. Additionally, travelers’ preferences and tastes have evolved, creating a need for updated and modernized hotel facilities.
Some properties have completed renovations while remaining open while others closed depending on the scope of the renovation.
- The New York Marriott Marquis never closed while renovating the guest rooms & public spaces.
- The Four Seasons Boston closed for 5 months to complete renovations to the lobby area and restaurants.
- The Casa Marina Key West closed in May 2023 and is due to reopen fully by the end of 2023.
- The Plaza Athenee Nobu Hotel and Spa New York has been closed since 2020 and will reopen in 2026.
- Plans to renovate the W Hollywood were announced in 2021 but no date has been scheduled.
- The Marriott Cancun closed in March 2023 and will reopen in 2024 as an all-inclusive resort.
There’s another hotel that’s just reopened after undergoing a massive renovation. Maroma, A Belmond Hotel is located on Mexico’s Riveria Maya. It closed in April 2021 and was slated for a May 2023 reopening. That date was pushed back and the resort officially reopened on August 3rd with 72 rooms, suites and villas, including 10 new one- and two-bedroom beachfront suites offering ocean views and direct beach access.
The hotel also has new food offerings and a totally reimagined Maroma Spa by Guerlain is set to open in November 2023.
We stayed at a Belmond property in Laos and it felt more like a private villa complex than a hotel. From what I’ve seen of Maroma, it has a similar vibe.
Rates start at $1,095 per night. If you’re considering a stay, I’d check to see if you can book through a travel agent who is affiliated with a luxury travel program like Virtuoso. Belmond also has its own program called the Bellini Club which offers similar benefits and upgrades.
