Sometimes you look around and wonder just how stupid some people can be.
- Whoever designed this most stupid piece of luggage ever
- The stupidest questions travelers have asked travel agents
- The stupid, confusing name for this hotel
And then you’ve got the people who WORK IN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY, and you think they’d know better. But they don’t.
- The Hilton hotel employee caught sucking a guest’s toes
- Spirit employees caught stealing from passengers’ bags
- Spirit employees (different ones!) caught throwing a passenger’s bag in the trash
So how far-fetched is it that an airport security staff was arrested for not only stealing a passenger’s $300 in cash, but trying to swallow it…aaaaaand it was all caught on the airport’s security camera.
The airport in question is Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) (MNL). And the security screening officer faces the “maximum penalty” after being caught on surveillance video swallowing $300 in cash taken from a passenger.
The alleged theft and “meal” happened on September 8, 2023, at the airport’s departure area at Terminal 1.
A Chinese traveler scheduled to catch a flight departing from MNL reported that his wallet was open and cash was missing after he and his belongings had gone through the terminal’s security checkpoint.
The officers who screened the passenger were required to go through a manual inspection, but nothing was found. With no evidence, airport authorities decided to review the CCTV video of the security checkpoint. Then’s when they saw footage of a female security screening officer taking and swallowing three rolled-up US $100 bills, using a bottle of water to help her swallow the evidence.
Local news reported that Philippine transportation secretary Jaime Bautista has authorized the Office of Transportation Security (OTS) to impose the “maximum penalty” to any personnel found guilty in the incident.
“The Secretary has authorized imposing the maximum penalty to those found guilty to demonstrate the Department’s determined push to rid Naia as well as other attached agencies of scalawags,” Bautista said.
The (soon-to-be ex-) security staff, who has not been identified, has already been placed on preventative suspension, pending investigation. The Office of Transportation Security (OTS) also recommends that she be charged.
This is reportedly the third theft at MNL since the beginning of the year. A security officer was caught stealing passengers’ personal belongings and money in February, and another allegedly stole a passenger’s watch and other items, in March.
