airBaltic’s Contest to Design Livery For its 50th Airbus A220-300

by SharonKurheg

If you could design the livery for a brand new plane, what would your artwork look like?

Creative airline geeks will be excited to know that airBaltic, the flag carrier of Latvia, is inviting the public to design the livery for its 50th Airbus A220-300. The aircraft is due to be delivered in November 2024.

The competition was launched this past Monday. airBaltic describes it as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to become “part of aviation history and be seen by millions.”

The winner will have their design embellished across airBaltic’s 50th Airbus A220-300. They’ll also be presented with a €3,000 (just shy $3300) gift certificate that can be used on the airline.

From airBaltic’s contest page:

Who is invited to participate?

  • Anyone above the age of 18
  • Individual artists, designers, and other creative talents
  • Non-commercial entities and independent creators

How can one participate?

1. Download a blank image of the A220-300 livery (here’s a link to the PDF)
2. Show off your best creative efforts on all three views (front, right side, left side) of the aircraft livery
3. Email your completed design to contest@airbaltic.com by the end of December 12, 2023

In your email, include the following data:

  • First name, last name, email address, and phone number
  • Design proposal in either PDF or PNG
  • A short description of your design in Latvian or English: what the livery conveys, how it correlates with airBaltic, and why it’s the right fit for our 50th aircraft

What are the submission rules?

  • The design must be authentic, crafted by the participant, and should not include elements that infringe any copyright or personal rights of a third party
  • The design must not contain elements that violate the law or promote other commercial brands
  • The design should not be on the engines and on the winglets. Original colour should remain.
  • Submissions from commercial entities or designs showcasing recognizable commercial brands will not be accepted
  • airBaltic management is not allowed to participate

How about copyright?

  • airBaltic is not obligated to use the design in its entirety and reserves the right to selectively use elements from the winning design
  • The winner must transfer full ownership of any intellectual property rights, including but not limited to copyrights, associated with the submitted design to airBaltic

How is the winner selected, and what is the prize?

1. Following the submission of designs, the airBaltic Design Committee will assess entries that comply with the submission rules and will select up to 20 designs

2. Artists of the nominated designs will be invited to sign T&Cs, after which their designs will be showcased on a dedicated webpage for public voting

3. Voting will be open exclusively to airBaltic Club members from December 19, 2023, till January 4, 2024, with each member entitled to one vote

4. The winner will be contacted privately by January 8 and will receive a prize: a 3000 EUR airBaltic gift certificate, along with credentials on the aircraft and media exposure

Another way to win something

Even if you decide to not enter the contest, you can still be a winner. Voters will have the chance to participate in a raffle for an opportunity to win a flight on the 50th aircraft!
