When an airline decides to move from one set of gates to another at an airport, it’s not a simple task of just putting up some signs. There’s a lot of logistical work behind the scenes to ensure that the move is executed as smoothly as possible.
So when this happens, there has to be a good reason. For example, Aer Lingus is moving operations at Chicago O’Hare from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 on January 24th.
The airline operates 9 flights per week between Chicago and Dublin, with that increasing to 14 flights in March. What would make them move terminals?
In 2022, Aer Lingus and American Airlines established a partnership where both airlines agreed to codeshare on select flights. This partnership allowed Aer Lingus to sell tickets for American Airlines flights within the United States using an EI flight number. Similarly, American Airlines could sell Aer Lingus flights departing from Dublin using an AA flight number. This codesharing arrangement provided greater convenience to passengers and allowed both airlines to expand their reach and offer more destinations to their customers.
If you haven’t guessed, Terminal 3 at Chicago O’Hare is the home of American Airlines.
By relocating to Terminal 3, Aer Lingus passengers arriving in Chicago will have an easier time connecting to American Airlines flights. Moreover, Aer Lingus Business Class customers and Aer Club Concierge and Platinum members will have access to the American Airlines Flagship Lounge at Terminal 3 before their flight.
To assist with the relocation, the airport is installing signage in Terminal 5 to notify passengers about the change. In addition, Aer Lingus and airport personnel will be available to assist passengers in locating the new gates.
