Why a Flight Crew Refused to Say Where the Plane Was Headed

by SharonKurheg

If you fly often enough, you see and hear some things so often that you may not even notice them anymore. Yet if you pay attention, you hear that yes, the flight crew really does mention the plane’s intended destination at least twice during your flight.

The first time is towards the beginning of the flight. Here’s a good example from a FA friend of mine:

Welcome aboard flight 2424 to Las Vegas. I am your flight leader “Chris Jones,” and I’m assisted by two other amazing New York flight attendants. We’re glad to have your board today. We appreciate the opportunity to provide you with that award winning Delta service. Before we depart, we do ask you to direct your attention to the video screens for brief safety demonstration of our aircraft…

And again just around the time of your descent:

Ladies and gentlemen, we have started descending as we are landing in Dubai International Airport in twenty minutes, please return your seats to their upright positions and…

Or:

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve been cleared to land at Miami….

And yet there was one time that a pilot and his entire flight crew WOULD NOT mention where the flight was going. How come? To keep a surprise, well, a surprise.

a red text with white backgroundA couple of months ago, friends of New Zealander Johnny Bounsall planned a bachelor party for him like no other. They planned a short celebratory trip that would remain a mystery for Johnny for as long as possible. To keep the surprise a surprise, they asked the flight staff, as well as the captain to play along, and help ensure that Johnny had no idea of where he was going on this “stag do.”

In a TikTok video that’s gotten nearly 8 million views, an Air New Zealand employee, speculated to be the pilot, can be heard revealing why he won’t be announcing the plane’s final destination.

“I usually would say where we’re going however, we have one gentleman on board for his stag do… and his good friends have managed to get him all the way through the airport and onboard the aircraft, and I believe he has no idea where we’re going,” said who was believed to be the pilot.

“So if you want to make sure you’re on the right aircraft, just check with someone beside you.”

It turns out they guys were on their way to Johnny’s hometown of Melbourne – but the friend who uploaded the video oh Johnny’s TikTok explained that everyone kept Johnny away from the departure gate and then the crew snuck them onto the plane before business class.

“From ground staff and air crew to pilot Air NZ were brilliant to work with on this one.”

The friend also added that Johnny’s fiancée packed his bag and passport, while Johnny was tricked into going to the airport under the guise of picking his cousin up. The friend also called Johnny’s boss to let them know he wouldn’t be in to work that day LOLOL!

Air New Zealand’s response? “Glad we could help!”
