Las Vegas is constantly reinventing itself. But since the Strip is only so long, sometimes one thing has to go away to make room for another thing. Case in point, the Tropicana Hotel, which originally opened in 1957, will close its doors for good in a little less than a month (April 2nd). The 9-acre property will be demolished to make way for a Major League Baseball stadium.
Places like the Neon Museum (have you gone? We did. We loved it!) try to keep as much history as possible. But some Vegas icons are just too big to salvage. Case in point, the volcano at the Mirage Las Vegas.
The Mirage Volcano has been erupting in front of the Mirage since 1989 (here’s a video of it). Like the fountains of the Bellagio (ever wonder how they run? Here’s how), it’s a free outdoor attraction designed to get peoples’ attention so they’ll come inside and gamble (the pirate show on the pirate ship in front of Treasure Island worked much the same way, until Treasure Island ended the show [although the pirate ship is still there]). but Hard Rock International bought the Mirage in 2022, and its future plans don’t include the volcano. They have plans, already approved by the county, to build a 600′ tall version of its signature guitar in that area.
Hard Rock has so ar been quiet about exactly when the volcano will end for good.
When Mirage Volcano closed for the Formula 1 race on the Las Vegas Strip in November, many people thought that would be the end of it and the attraction would simply never open again. But lo and behold, it did, a few days after the race.
Then the volcano closed again during the Super Bowl, so it could become part of will be transformed into Paramount Global’s famed mountain logo. Once again people thought that was the end of the Mirage Volcano and it wouldn’t open again. But the volcano apparently started spewing again on March 1st – yay!
Plans for the Mirage-to-Hard-Rock changeover are 100% going to happen, and the Mirage Volcano WILL eventually stop and be dismantled. But for now, at least, its fans have a reprieve.
