It seems like forever, but Hyatt purchased Two Roads Hospitality only six years ago. It’s hard to keep track because Hyatt has been on a roll, scooping up hotel management companies and adding their brands to the expanding universe of Hyatt brands.
Two Roads Hospitality owned and managed a variety of upscale hotels, resorts, and vacation homes worldwide. The acquisition deal was worth $480 million and encompassed all of Two Roads Hospitality’s brands, including Alila, Destination, Joie de Vivre, Thompson, and tommie. Some of these brands, like Thompson and Alila, align well with Hyatt’s future expansion plans and will become a significant part of their portfolio.
While the tommie hotels were folded into the Joie de Vivre brand, the one brand that seemed to not fit into any category was the Destination Hotels. Rebranded as Destination by Hyatt, the collection of hotels, residences and villas isn’t like any of their other brands. Destination by Hyatt is described as:
Individual by design yet connected by a commitment to capture the true essence of each locale, Destination by Hyatt properties are immersive hubs of exploration. Worlds unto themselves, our properties are part of every imaginable landscape, ranging from snow-capped mountains, sun-kissed shores and star-dusted cities to colorful deserts and lush forests.
A home and a hotel in one, residential offerings within the Destination by Hyatt brand combine private, upscale vacation home living with the perks—and services—of hotel vacationing. Escape to a hotel-branded vacation residence and settle into the local community lifestyle.
There are currently only 17 Destination by Hyatt properties, with most of them located in the United States. I didn’t pay much attention to the brand until I learned that Hyatt is opening a property in St. Lucia, marking its first location in the Caribbean.
The Cas en Bas Beach Resort is expected to open in late 2024. The development is located on the northern tip of St. Lucia, between two award-winning golf courses and the beach. There will be 90 residential-style studio, one-, and two-bedroom suites.
The resort isn’t yet listed on the Hyatt website, however the property site does give some insight into how integrated it will be with World of Hyatt.
Members who book directly through Hyatt channels can enjoy personalized care and access to distinct benefits including Guest of Honor, confirmed suite upgrades at time of booking, diverse wellbeing offerings, digital key, and exclusive member rates.
Other Destination by Hyatt properties are listed in Category 5 to 8, so look at paying between 20,000 and 40,000 World of Hyatt points per night for a standard rate.
Much of Hyatt’s expansion in the Caribbean has been in the all-inclusive space, so it’s nice to see they announce a different type of property. The Destination by Hyatt brand hasn’t seen much expansion since it was acquired in 2018. It will be interesting to see if this was a one-off opportunity or the beginning of a new phase of Hyatt’s growth plan, which focuses more on luxury experiences.
