What’s The Best Credit Card Offer To Maximize Amazon Purchases

by joeheg

It’s become an annual tradition that, as the holiday season approaches, credit cards send out limited-time spending promotions for the leading online retailer, Amazon.com. Here are some offers we’ve recently received. I’m still deciding which ones I want to use.

Citi Offers

This is the first time I remember seeing a Citi Offer for Amazon.com. It offers 10% back, but the offer max is $5 and is only good on the first transaction after adding the offer to your card. So, if a transaction is split up and posted as separate charges, you won’t get the full credit. It’s best to buy a single item at $50 or purchase a gift card so you can use the money over multiple transactions.

Discover

One of Discover’s fourth-quarter 5% back categories is Amazon.com. Discover’s quarterly bonus offers max out at $1,500 in purchases, which could mean up to $75 in cash back rewards.

Chase Spending Offers

We received two different Chase offers for Amazon.com on our co-brand cards.

The first was on our Ritz Carlton Card, offering 5X Marriott Bonvoy points on up to $1,000 spent at grocery stores, restaurants and Amazon.com.

The other offer was on our IHG One Rewards Preferred card for 7X points on the same categories, a close-up of a sign

Which Offer Is Best

I have to decide which is the better offer.

  • 5% cash
  • 5X Marriott Bonvoy points
  • 7X IHG One Rewards points

Since I value IHG points around 1/2 each, that offer is worth 3.5%, less than Discover’s 5%. The final decision of Discover or Marriott is if I value Marriott points over 1 cent each. Looking at my most recent points stays, I have not been getting over 1 cent per point of value per point. That means I’ll use the Discover card for our Amazon.com purchases until the end of December or when we max the $1,500 spending cap.

Final Thought

I’ve occasionally received offers on my Chase cards that provided better than 5% cash back on Amazon.com purchases, such as when I received 5X Southwest points. However, I value both IHG and Marriott points at less than 1 cent each, so right now, the cashback from Discover is my best bonus offer.
