- Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty: 30-minute grace period. Late returns beyond this may incur hourly or full-day fees.
- Fox Rent A Car: 59-minute grace period. Late returns add $25/day.
- Sixt: 30-minute grace period, then full-day charges.
- Payless: 29-minute grace period, followed by hourly fees from the first late minute.
These policies make it crucial to return your rental car on time—or call ahead if you’ll be late.
How to Use This to Your Advantage
You can save on rental costs by strategically planning your flights. Schedule your return flight close to the same time as your arrival, allowing plenty of time to return the car without crossing into extra billing. For example, if you land at 10 AM and rent the car at 10:30 AM, try to schedule your return flight around the same time or earlier.
