Sometimes you can’t make this crap up. And of course, it happened in Florida – but at least this time it wasn’t a “Florida Woman.”
A Maryland woman is facing felony charges of cruelty towards a child while she was waiting to fly back home from Florida.
What Allegedly Happened on the Plane
According to local affiliate WFTV, On Memorial Day, May 26th, at 1:21pm, Sanford Airport Police were called to a gate at Orlando Sanford Airport (SFB), located about 45 miles NE of Walt Disney World. They were responding to a report of a disturbance on Allegiant Flight 2085 from SFB to Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) located in Hagerstown, MD. According to the police report, the caller stated that the pilot was requesting law enforcement to respond due to allegations of a “disturbance.”
When the officer arrived, Crampton and other members of her party had exited the plane and were “walking away from the gate” after “voluntarily” deplaning. One of the interviewees said that a juvenile on the flight was having behavioral issues both at home and on the flight, getting in trouble recently, and was being “very disrespectful on the flight,” but never touched another passenger on the plane.
Officers continued that they were told Crampton had gotten into a verbal argument with the juvenile, hitting them with her fist and then with a water bottle. Crampton then allegedly “slammed” the juvenile’s head into the airplane window. A witness to the incident, police say, wrote in a statement that the “woman (Crampton) was not correcting the child. She was abusing him, whipping the s**t out of the kid.” According to the report, police say she went beyond “typical disciplinary actions.”
A second witness reportedly told police that Crampton had been called “fat” and was told that she could not fit in her seat for “about two minutes” by the juvenile, leading to the alleged violence from Crampton as well as her reportedly telling the juvenile that “she hates him.”
Statements from Those Involved
Crampton was also interviewed, as was the victim. Police say that Crampton said the juvenile, “had been very rude and disrespectful during their trip to Disney,” before saying that a verbal argument on the plane escalated to the juvenile calling her “fat” and “Miss Piggy”. Police added that Crampton took the juvenile’s phone away, resulting in the child pushing her arm off the armrest twice “before she responded by smacking them”.
Flight attendants on board reportedly did not witness the alleged altercation.
Witness statements were collected, but the family, according to the police, declined to provide written statements. Crampton was then taken from SFB and transported to Seminole County Jail.
Crampton was charged with felony child abuse and was granted a $10,000 bond. She was also ordered to stay away from the child after her first court appearance.
What Happened Next
The FBI was notified of the incident, “and will follow up after the report is completed.”
Our take on this
Obviously, any kid who is old enough to be in school is old enough to be taught not to be rude and call people names. Hopefully, the child will get whatever behavioral help they need.
That being said, there is NEVER an excuse for an adult to hit a child, regardless of how “rude” they are. Hopefully, Ms. Crampton will also get the help she clearly needs.
