Sometimes an airline will make a big change. Sometimes the change is small but can potentially impact passengers in big ways. Such is the case with United’s new check-in policy.
Effective June 3, United will start requiring all travelers to check in no less than 45 minutes before their flight. And if that sounds familiar, it should – the 45-minute rule was already in effect for passengers who were checking luggage. However, passengers who were not checking luggage were allowed to check in 30 minutes before. That’s no longer the case – the deadline for everyone is now 45 minutes.
Domestic passengers who fail to check in on time could be denied entry through the airport, resulting in a missed flight.
The new change won’t impact international travelers – they’re still required to check in at least 60 minutes before their flight’s scheduled departure time.
The new deadline applies to all airports and air travelers using United’s app to check in for their flight online. All domestic travelers must still ensure they’re checked in before the 45-minute deadline.
It’s recommended that travelers find out if the airport where their flight is scheduled to depart has any specific check-in deadlines.
Why the change?
In a statement to Newsweek, United Airlines said, “The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines. Customers can review domestic and international airport check-in time limits here and use our lobby kiosks for self-service as needed.”
Many thanks to Norm J. for the heads up.
