Marriott Is Pulling the Plug on HawaiianMiles Transfers

by joeheg

Marriott Bonvoy is officially ending its partnership with Hawaiian Airlines’ HawaiianMiles program, and the change is happening fast.

The announcement came as a result of Hawaiian’s broader transition into a unified loyalty program with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan™, which is set to launch on October 1, 2025. Ahead of that date, HawaiianMiles members are seeing partnerships sunset — and Marriott Bonvoy is the latest.

Here’s What’s Changing

According to Marriott:

“Earning HawaiianMiles® with Hawaiian Airlines® and transferring them to Marriott Bonvoy® points or vice versa will no longer be an option after August 20, 2025.”

That means two things for Marriott Bonvoy members:

  • If you’re currently earning HawaiianMiles for your Marriott stays, you’ll need to switch your earning preference to either Marriott Bonvoy points or another airline, like Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan™, to continue earning miles.
  • If you want to transfer HawaiianMiles to Bonvoy points (or the other way around), you have until August 20, 2025 to do it. After that, the window closes for good.

a white background with black textMarriott notes that if you don’t take action by the deadline, your earning preference will default back to Bonvoy points — and your remaining HawaiianMiles in their system may expire. This part is confusing, though, because HawaiianMiles from Marriott stays would have been deposited directly into your Hawaiian account. It’s unclear if Marriott is holding any miles “on deck,” but if you’re earning airline miles with Marriott, it’s worth double-checking your preferences.

Earning Airline Miles with Marriott? Time to Switch to Alaska

If you want to keep earning airline miles for your Marriott stays after HawaiianMiles disappears, you’re not out of luck. You can still earn with Alaska Airlines, which will be part of the combined loyalty program. Marriott’s airline miles earning chart is the same for both programs:

  • 2 airline miles per dollar at most Marriott properties (e.g., JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance, etc.)
  • 1 airline mile per dollar at lower-tier brands like Courtyard, SpringHill Suites, and Four Points

Switching your earning preference to Alaska Mileage Plan is easy — just choose it from the drop-down menu in your Bonvoy profile.

Did You Know? You Could Transfer Airline Miles Into Bonvoy Points

Here’s something I didn’t realize: Marriott also lets you transfer airline miles into Bonvoy points — not just the other way around. The list of supported programs includes:

  • Air Canada Aeroplan®
  • ANA Mileage Club
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles® (until 8/20/25)
  • Japan Airlines JAL Mileage Bank
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer®
  • United MileagePlus®

But don’t get too excited — these transfers come with a terrible rate. For HawaiianMiles, it was:

Redeem 5,000 HawaiianMiles for 2,500 Marriott Bonvoy Points

That’s a 2:1 ratio, and frankly, I don’t think anyone should be valuing a Marriott point at 2 HawaiianMiles (or Alaska miles, for that matter).

Final Thought

If you’ve been earning HawaiianMiles for Marriott stays, now’s the time to switch your preference — and Alaska Mileage Plan is the obvious successor. And if you’re sitting on a stash of HawaiianMiles and thinking about transferring them to Bonvoy, you might want to reconsider. The value just isn’t there.

The new Alaska-Hawaiian loyalty program launches in October, and more details are expected later this month. Until then, make sure your preferences are up to date before the August 20 deadline.

I should point out that in general, even if you want the air miles, you should still earn your points in the Bonvoy currency and then transfer to your airline program. Air mile earn rates at Marriott properties are (mostly) 2 miles/$, however even base Bonvoy members earn 10 points/$, which transfer at a 3:1 rate = 3.33 miles/$ (plus a 5000 mile bonus if you transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points).

It’s the rare occasion that a cross-program transfer is better than as a partnership earning rate.
