Why Amex Platinum Cardholders Shouldn’t Ignore the Walmart+ Benefit

by joeheg

I’ve been an American Express Platinum cardholder for the last several years. While I agree with critics who say the Platinum card has become a glorified coupon book, it doesn’t mean there isn’t value when taking advantage of those coupons. It’s been easy for me to get back more than the $695 annual fee and the additional $195 we pay to have an authorized user.

However, until recently, I ignored one of the benefits of being an AMEX Platinum cardholder: Walmart+. I never thought I’d sign up, but since Amex offers full reimbursement for the membership fee, I decided it was time to give it a try.

How to Sign Up for Walmart+ with Amex Platinum

The key to making this work is signing up for the monthly Walmart+ membership, not the annual plan. The Platinum card provides up to $12.95 per month in statement credits when you use your card to pay, which fully covers the cost plus taxes. Annual memberships aren’t eligible for the credit.

You could enroll directly through Walmart when placing an order, but I recommend going through the Amex website. Under the Platinum card benefits, you’ll find the Walmart+ offer and a link to start your membership. Skip Walmart’s 30-day free trial—since Amex reimburses you every month, the trial doesn’t matter.

What You Get with Walmart+

  • Free shipping with no order minimum: Even small orders ship for free! Choose from a huge assortment of eligible items and never pay shipping fees.
  • Free delivery from your store: Same-day and next-day delivery on orders over $35.
  • Free Paramount+ subscription: Stream TV shows and movies at no extra cost.
  • Fuel discounts: Save at Murphy USA and Exxon/Mobil stations.
  • Mobile scan & go: Use your phone to check out in Walmart stores.
  • Shopping portal stacking: Walmart.com often appears on shopping portals, unlike Amazon, letting you earn extra points or cashback.

Why It’s Worth It

At $12.95 per month, Walmart+ normally costs about $155 a year. Amex Platinum covers the full amount when you use your card, making it essentially a free perk. Even if you don’t shop at Walmart regularly, perks like Paramount+ streaming or fuel savings can easily justify using it at least occasionally.

Final Thought

It only took a few minutes to sign up for Walmart+ with my Amex Platinum card. If I can take advantage of discounted prices, free shipping, and the other perks, it’s just one more reason to keep my “coupon book” card for another year.

Also through Walmart+, three months free trial YouTube Premium, instead of the standard one month trial.

I can’t believe people are not automatically signing up for walmart + as soon as they have the plat or gold card. If they have what you need it is so much cheaper and faster delivery than prime. Prime is a shell of its former self always delays now when it should 2nd day. Walmart half the time I select ship it and someone will just drive it to my house for free! It’s what prime used to be. I’ve had egg deliveries and bottled water show up just fine. When I was packing for a trip needed some decongestant walmart+ delivered in 2 hours for free. It’s fantastic.
