We Didn’t Expect This From Hyatt: A $40 Early Check-In Fee

by joeheg

Don’t get me wrong — World of Hyatt is far and above the rest when it comes to what they offer members. From guaranteed suite upgrades for Globalists to consistent late checkout even for lower-tier elites, Hyatt stands out as one of the most member-friendly programs out there.

That’s why this email caught my attention.

Charging for Early Check-In?

A few days before our stay, we received an email from a Hyatt Place offering a “Member 12 p.m. Early Check-In” option — for an extra $40 per night.

It was surprising to see Hyatt — a brand known for its generous elite perks — pushing early check-in as a paid add-on. And since our stay was for three nights, I couldn’t help but wonder how the “per night” part of the fee would actually work.

Reality Check: Not All Bad

As it turned out, I didn’t get the chance to find out — we weren’t arriving until around 4 p.m. anyway. When we got there, our upgraded room was ready, and we were even offered late checkout at departure.

So it’s not all bad. Hyatt’s strengths still shine where it matters most: recognition, upgrades, and flexibility on the back end of a stay.

And honestly, if we had been arriving early and the option to check in three hours ahead for $40 was available, I probably would have paid it. After a long flight, getting into your room early can be worth every penny.

The Bottom Line

World of Hyatt still leads the pack when it comes to elite treatment and late checkout benefits, but this glimpse into monetized early check-in shows that even Hyatt isn’t immune to the industry trend of charging for what used to be complimentary.

At least for now, Hyatt’s balance of generosity and occasional upselling still tilts strongly in favor of loyal members — and that’s why it remains one of the most rewarding programs out there.

Just checked into the Grand Hyatt San Antonio this morning @ 10am-no early check in fee even mentioned. However, last week @ the Hotel Fera Anaheim, a Doubletree, I was informed by the clerk upon arrival at noon that my room was ready ‘but since check-in isn’t until 4pm, I’ll have to charge you $25 early check in fee in order to give you the key’.

But that’s pretty much the rule for Hilton properties now. I wasn’t expecting from a Hyatt.

Where was this? I’m less interested in shaming than knowing in case I would happen to book there.

At a Hyatt Place in New York City. Like I said, they still upgraded us as Discoverists.
