How To Double-Dip With Starbucks Rewards & Marriott Bonvoy

by joeheg

If you’ve read this blog for a while, you already know we’re unapologetically pro-Starbucks when we travel. It’s predictable coffee in unfamiliar places, mobile ordering in chaotic airports, and an easy “default” breakfast when we’re jet-lagged and don’t feel like exploring. We even explained why Starbucks is often our go-to on the road in this post about how we get coffee when we travel.

Since mid-2024, Starbucks Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy have had a quiet but very useful partnership that’s now become part of our regular travel routine. Link the two programs once, and you can:

  • Earn Double Stars on Starbucks purchases during eligible Marriott stays
  • Pick up recurring Marriott Bonvoy Week bonuses several times a year
  • (If you really want to) convert Bonvoy points into Starbucks Stars

All of this is on top of the separate Starbucks partnership with Delta SkyMiles, which still lets you earn miles when you reload your Starbucks balance and earn Double Stars on Delta travel days. We went deep on that in our guide to maximizing SkyMiles under Delta’s new Starbucks earning rules.

We’ll break this post into three parts:

  1. Double Starbucks Stars while you’re staying at Marriott Bonvoy hotels
  2. Converting Marriott Bonvoy points to Starbucks Stars (and whether that’s smart)
  3. How Marriott Bonvoy Week works now that it’s handing out 300-point bonuses and what’s coming in December

You can see the current joint landing page here:

Part 1: Double Starbucks Stars During Marriott Bonvoy Stays

a hand holding a red drink and a card

Once you’ve linked your Starbucks Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy accounts, you can earn Double Stars on Starbucks purchases made on days you’re staying at eligible Marriott Bonvoy properties.

In practice, it works like this:

  • Link your accounts: Start from the Starbucks–Marriott microsite and sign in to both programs.
  • Book a qualifying stay: You need an “eligible stay” at a participating Marriott Bonvoy hotel (paid or award; standard Bonvoy rules apply).
  • Buy Starbucks during your stay: Make qualifying purchases at participating U.S. Starbucks locations while logged in to your Starbucks Rewards account.
  • Earn Double Stars: You get your normal Stars plus an equal number of bonus Stars for that spend, up to an annual cap.

A few important details from the fine print:

  • Where it works: Participating Starbucks stores in the U.S. (including territories) that earn Stars.
  • When it counts: From check-in day through checkout day of an eligible Marriott stay.
  • What counts: Food, drinks, and most merchandise. Alcohol and Starbucks gift cards don’t count as qualifying purchases.
  • Annual cap: There’s a limit to how many bonus Stars you can earn from this particular perk each program year; once you’ve hit that cap, you’ll go back to earning regular Stars.

For us, this is pure “found” value. We’re already stopping at Starbucks near the hotel or in the airport; now those same runs earn:

  • Starbucks Stars,
  • Double Stars on Marriott stay days, and
  • whatever points/miles our credit card is handing out.

If you’re the kind of traveler who always finds the nearest Starbucks before you find the nearest museum, you might as well have Marriott quietly sweeten the deal in the background.

Part 2: You Can Transfer Marriott Bonvoy Points to Starbucks Stars – But Should You?

The partnership also lets you transfer Marriott Bonvoy points into Starbucks Stars. This is where things sound exciting, but the math gets… rough.

Current conversion rate:

  • 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points → 100 Starbucks Stars

Additional rules:

  • Transfer size: Minimum 1,000 points; up to 50,000 points per day, in increments of at least 10 points.
  • Posting time: Stars typically show up in your Starbucks Rewards account within 1–2 business days.
  • One-way only: Once you’ve converted points to Stars, you can’t reverse the transfer.

So, is it ever a good idea?

Most points nerds (us included) value:

  • Marriott Bonvoy points are worth roughly 0.6–0.9¢ each in decent real-world hotel redemptions
  • Starbucks Stars are at around ~2¢ each if you use them smartly on drinks or food instead of tiny add-ons

Run the numbers for 1,000 Bonvoy points → 100 Stars:

  • 1,000 Bonvoy points at ~0.7¢ ≈ $7 in hotel value
  • 100 Stars at ~2¢ ≈ $2 in Starbucks value

You’re effectively trading ~$7 of hotel stay for ~$2 of coffee.

That’s… not a good trade.

When might it be reasonable?

  • You have a tiny, orphaned Bonvoy balance that will never realistically get used for a room night.
  • Your Bonvoy points are close to expiring and this is literally your only easy option.
  • Your hotel nights are mostly on someone else’s dime, and you personally just want “free” Starbucks without worrying about optimization.

Outside of those edge cases, this is the classic “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” You’re almost always better off saving Bonvoy points for hotel nights or airline transfers and letting Starbucks Stars come from your actual Starbucks spend.

Part 3: Marriott Bonvoy Week – 300-Point Bonuses & Upcoming Dates

The third piece of the puzzle is Marriott Bonvoy Week at Starbucks, which runs several months a year, typically in the third week of the month.

During these weeks, if your accounts are linked:

  • You earn a one-time bonus after making three qualifying Starbucks purchases (minimum $2 each, excluding alcohol and gift cards) at participating U.S. stores.

Historically, that bonus has usually been 100 Marriott Bonvoy points per Bonvoy Week. However, Starbucks and Marriott have recently dialed things up. The current banner copy says:

“Earn 300 Points During Marriott Bonvoy Week at Starbucks in November. The third week of select months is Marriott Bonvoy Week at Starbucks — and this November you’ll receive 300 Marriott Bonvoy® points after three qualifying Starbucks® purchases. It’s just our way of giving extra thanks to you.”

They’ve also added a handy “Add to Calendar” button with the note:

The next Marriott Bonvoy Week is December 15–21.

So for this period:

  • Linked members will earn 300 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after three qualifying Starbucks purchases during the November Marriott Bonvoy Week.
  • The bonus is earned once per Bonvoy Week, after you hit your third qualifying purchase.
  • Another Marriott Bonvoy Week is already scheduled for December 15–21, but no mention of the upcoming offer details.

Is this worth chasing?

Even at the boosted level:

  • 300 Bonvoy points at ~0.7¢ each ≈ $2–$3 in hotel value

We wouldn’t make special trips just for the bonus, but:

  • If you’re already going to Starbucks three times that week (very on-brand for us),
  • and your accounts are linked,

…then it’s basically a tiny, automated rebate on top of your Stars and Double Stars.

Big picture on Bonvoy Week:

  • Several months a year → third week = Marriott Bonvoy Week at Starbucks
  • Standard offer has been 100-point bonus after three qualifying purchases
  • Right now, there’s a boosted “Earn 300 Points During Marriott Bonvoy Week in November” promo
  • The next week is already on the calendar for December 15–21

Set it and forget it: link the accounts once, keep your usual Starbucks routine, and let the extra Bonvoy points trickle in.

What About Delta SkyMiles? Still Safe.

One last reassurance: this does not replace or interfere with the Starbucks partnership with Delta SkyMiles.

If you’ve already linked Starbucks and Delta, you can still:

  • Earn SkyMiles when you reload your Starbucks balance with $25+ in a single transaction, and
  • Get Double Stars on Starbucks purchases on Delta travel days.

That’s separate from the Marriott tie-in. In practice, for our travel style:

  • Marriott link = Double Stars on stay days + recurring Bonvoy Week bonuses
  • Delta link = SkyMiles when we reload + Double Stars on flight days

We’ve already broken down how to make the most of the Delta side of things in our post about adapting to Delta’s new Starbucks earning rules, so it’s nice to know that everything you do there still works even after you add Marriott into the mix.

Layer that on top of the fact that we already like (and use) Starbucks when we travel—just like we talked about in our “Sorry, we like Starbucks” post—and this partnership becomes a nice little “extra,” not something we have to work at.

Bottom Line

If you’re both a Marriott Bonvoy and a Starbucks Rewards member, there’s no reason not to:

  • Link your accounts via starbucks.marriott.com/en-us.
  • Let Double Stars run in the background on Starbucks purchases during eligible Marriott stays.
  • Take the easy Marriott Bonvoy Week bonuses — right now that includes a boosted 300-point bonus after three qualifying purchases in November, with the next week already scheduled for December 15–21.
  • Think twice before converting Bonvoy points to Stars; it’s a fun but generally poor-value redemption.
  • Keep your Delta link intact so you’re still earning SkyMiles when you reload your Starbucks balance (and re-read our Delta+Starbucks guide if you need a refresher).

For us, nothing about this changes how much we go to Starbucks when we travel—we were already there. Now it just means those stops can quietly feed our hotel points, coffee rewards, and airline miles all at once.
