How To Save $130 With This Hidden AMEX Platinum Benefit

by joeheg

I’ve been an AMEX Platinum cardholder for several years now, and I’ve found that the value I receive from the various credits can outweigh the annual fee — now $895 — as long as you actually use the benefits.

I also make it a point to review all the benefits each year to ensure I’m maximizing the card’s value. And yet, it took me a while to notice an additional ‘credit’ I wasn’t counting — not a standalone Platinum perk, but a benefit that unlocks another benefit. Either way, it can translate into real savings — depending on what you’d otherwise pay for.

AMEX Platinum Walmart+ Credit

One Platinum credit I didn’t use for a long time was the Walmart+ subscription. To be clear, Walmart+ isn’t “free” — but with the Platinum Card, Amex reimburses the monthly Walmart+ fee (up to the monthly plan amount, plus applicable taxes) via statement credits once you enroll.

We’ve ordered a few things from Walmart, but I haven’t delved into the Walmart+ benefits. And to be honest, we’re not frequent Walmart shoppers. However, we do watch TV, and Paramount+ has enough content that we’ll actually use that the included streaming benefit ended up being the real value for us.

Walmart+ Includes Streaming (But It’s Not Just Paramount+ Anymore)

At the time I originally enrolled, Walmart+ was best known for including Paramount+ (ad-supported). That’s still an option — but Walmart+ now has a streaming choice:

  • Paramount+ Essential (ad-supported) (typically $7.99/month if you pay directly), or
  • Peacock Premium (ad-supported) (typically $10.99/month if you pay directly)

You can switch between those services, but only once every 90 days. So whichever one you pick, you’re “locked in” for a bit.

If you choose Paramount+, there’s one other detail worth knowing: Paramount+ Premium is currently the only upgrade option from the ad-supported tier. If you choose Peacock, you’re limited to the ad-supported version through this Walmart+ benefit.

Signing Up for Paramount+ or Peacock with Walmart+

Signing up was easy. The main thing is to start by signing into your Walmart+ account.

Here’s the step-by-step list of how to enroll:

  1. Sign into your Walmart account.
  2. Go to your Account page.
  3. Select Walmart+.
  4. Find the streaming benefit in the Benefits Hub (you may see it as “Video Streaming”).
  5. Select the option to activate (Paramount+ or Peacock, depending on what you choose).
  6. Create an account for the service you selected.
  7. Build your profile to start streaming.

Note: If you’re activating Paramount+ through Walmart+, you’ll generally need to use the same email address you use for Walmart+.

Final Thought

I held off on using the Walmart+ credit for way too long, but I’m glad I finally got around to setting it up. Between Walmart+ itself and the streaming benefit, it’s another one of those Platinum perks that’s easy to overlook — and easy to forget to include when you’re doing the annual “is this card still worth it?” math.

Just keep in mind: the streaming value depends on what you’d actually pay for otherwise, and Walmart+ now makes you choose between Paramount+ (ad-supported) and Peacock (ad-supported), with the ability to switch every 90 days.
