Not long ago, my husband Joe, who is the co-author of this blog, posted about the most brilliant travel question he had ever heard. Way back when, it was a way his family found some REALLY good eats when they were in a town they weren’t super familiar with. At the time, before everyone had cell phones, it was a fantastic idea — and not only did Joe’s family get to experience some amazing restaurants, but so did he and I when we started traveling as a couple.
But times have changed and, as I said, the internet is at everyone’s fingertips — you don’t necessarily have to rely on the hotel concierge for those kinds of recommendations anymore. These days, there’s a much simpler way — and it works almost anywhere in the world.
A friend of ours mentioned how they find “the best restaurant in town” anywhere in the world — and it’s genius.
Simply Google “best restaurants near me.”
Yep, that’s it.
If you do that in Orlando (which is near where we live), you get a wide variety of options:
- OpenTable’s “The 10 Best Restaurants Near Me”
- A Reddit thread of someone asking for “Your top 5 Orlando-area restaurants?”
- Orlando Weekly’s “The 25 Most Popular Orlando Restaurants Right Now” (caveat — that one’s from May 2024)
- The best restaurants in Orlando from Time Out Worldwide
But let’s say you’re in another country where the primary language isn’t English (assuming your mother tongue is English — most of our readers are from the U.S.). Ask the question in the local language — you can use any translation app.
- Japan? 近くで一番のレストラン
- Swahili? Mkahawa bora karibu nami
- Spain? El mejor restaurante cerca de mí
- Greece? Το καλύτερο εστιατόριο κοντά μου
- Brazil? Melhor restaurante perto de mim
And then, of course, you can use any app that translates websites to understand the results.
Quick, simple, and no worrying about being steered toward a tourist trap because someone’s getting a kickback.
