How To Use The AMEX Platinum Hertz Perks You Might Be Missing

by joeheg

American Express Platinum cardholders get access to all sorts of travel benefits, but some of the most useful ones can also be the easiest to overlook.

That’s especially true with rental car perks. Unlike some AMEX benefits that require booking through the AMEX Travel portal, the Hertz perks connected to the Platinum Card are tied to your card membership and your Hertz account. Once you know where to look, they’re actually pretty easy to unlock.

After I wrote about how the AMEX Platinum offers a 4-hour grace period on Hertz rental car returns, several readers reached out asking how to get those benefits. So here’s a closer look at what Platinum Card Members get with Hertz and how to make sure the perks are attached to your rental.

Hertz Benefits

American Express Platinum Card Members receive President’s Circle status with Hertz, which includes:

  • Guaranteed upgrades
  • Free additional driver
  • Priority service at the rental counter
  • 1.5 points per $1 spent
  • 24/7 dedicated customer service line
  • Access to special promotions and offers

To access these benefits, you’ll need to link your Hertz account with your AMEX Platinum card. You can do this online or by calling the number on the back of your card.

In addition, Platinum Card Members can use the AMEX Corporate Discount Code (CDP) 211762 to unlock extra savings and benefits. Here’s what that code provides:

  • 4-hour grace period for returns within the U.S. before an extra day’s charge is applied
  • Up to 20% off published base rates
  • Guaranteed upgrades on certain vehicle classes with a 24-hour advance reservation

You can find more details on the Hertz website here.

Important Notes

Using the CDP requires paying for the rental with your AMEX Platinum card. Hertz specifically says:

“The Platinum Card® Member must use the designated Amex Corporate Discount Code (CDP) at the time of reservation and pay for the Hertz rental with his or her Platinum Card.”

That said, I once used the code but paid with my Chase Sapphire Reserve card that was linked to my Hertz account, and everything still worked as expected. That’s obviously just one data point, not something I’d count on every time, but it’s worth mentioning.

Final Thoughts

Credit card perks can sometimes feel like they’re hidden behind too many steps, but this one is actually pretty straightforward. Link your Hertz account, make sure the right discount code is attached to your reservation, and you should be set.

For Platinum Card Members who rent from Hertz, perks like President’s Circle status, potential upgrades, and the 4-hour grace period can make the experience a little easier and potentially a little cheaper, too.

If you’ve had a good—or bad—experience using AMEX Platinum Hertz perks, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
