Understanding Chase Sapphire Lounge Entry Rules

by joeheg

Chase has been rapidly expanding its Sapphire Lounge network across major U.S. airports, offering a premium experience for eligible travelers. With locations now open coast to coast—and more on the way—you’re more likely than ever to encounter one on your travels.

If you hold a Chase Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Reserve for Business, J.P. Morgan Reserve, or Ritz-Carlton Credit Card, you might assume access is as simple as showing your Chase card at the door. But Chase handles lounge access a little differently than American Express Centurion Lounges or Capital One Lounges.

That’s because Sapphire Lounge access is still built around the complimentary Priority Pass Select membership that comes with eligible Chase cards. Chase now automatically enrolls eligible cardmembers, making the process much easier. Your digital membership card is available right in the Chase app. You can even add your Priority Pass card to Apple Wallet for easier access at the lounge entrance.

Understanding Priority Pass For Chase Sapphire Lounges

Travelers are no strangers to the Priority Pass network of airport lounges. Many travel credit cards offer a Priority Pass Select membership, with access to over 1,300 lounges worldwide.

What some travelers may not realize is that Chase Sapphire Lounges—including the location at JFK Airport—are part of that broader ecosystem.

However, what matters most when visiting a Chase Sapphire Lounge is which type of Priority Pass membership you’re using. Chase-issued luxury card memberships come with one set of rules. Other Priority Pass memberships come with another.

Which Chase Credit Cards Offer Access?

Currently, four Chase card products offer the complimentary Priority Pass membership used for Sapphire Lounge access:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® – The flagship personal card and the main one still open to new applicants.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ – Chase’s premium business card, with lounge access for primary cardmembers only.
  • J.P. Morgan Reserve® – Available by invitation only, generally for select J.P. Morgan clients.
  • Ritz-Carlton Credit Card – No longer available for new applications, but still available through product changes from certain Chase Marriott cards.

How To Access A Chase Sapphire Lounge

Chase now makes this much easier than it used to.

As of late 2025, eligible Chase cardmembers are automatically enrolled in their complimentary Priority Pass membership. To enter a Sapphire Lounge, Chase says eligible cardmembers can show the physical or digital Priority Pass membership card that comes with their Chase card, along with a valid boarding pass within three hours of departure.

Your digital Priority Pass membership card can be found in the Chase Mobile app under More > Airport lounges. If you want one less thing to fumble with at the airport, it’s worth setting it up ahead of time and saving it to your phone’s wallet.

How To Identify A Chase-Issued Priority Pass Membership

It can still be confusing if you have more than one Priority Pass membership, especially since the cards and app credentials can all blur together. That matters because Chase-issued memberships offer expanded access to Sapphire Lounges, whereas other Priority Pass memberships are much more limited.

According to OMAAT, you can tell which bank a Priority Pass card is linked to by the membership number.

Priority Pass cards issued through Chase typically have 16 digit membership numbers, the card number typically starts with 735, and the cards are typically valid for three years.

That said, the easiest option now is probably just to check the Chase app and use the digital card that appears there, rather than trying to keep track of multiple physical cards in your wallet.

Guest Policy Differences Between Chase Cards

This is the part of the policy that has changed the most.

Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Reserve for Business, J.P. Morgan Reserve, and Ritz-Carlton cardmembers may enter with up to two guests at no charge. Additional guests cost $27 each. There’s no additional charge for children under two.

Until early 2026, the Ritz-Carlton Card stood out because it offered unlimited guests at Sapphire Lounges. That made it one of the best cards around for families or anyone traveling with a group.

That no longer seems to be the case. Based on Chase’s current wording, the Ritz card now follows the same basic structure as the other Chase-issued cards, with access for the cardmember plus up to two complimentary guests.

Can Other Priority Pass Members Access Chase Sapphire Lounges?

What about travelers with a different Priority Pass membership? Since Chase Sapphire Lounges are part of the Priority Pass network, can someone with a Capital One Venture X-issued membership or another non-Chase Priority Pass card still get in?

Yes, but there’s a catch.

Priority Pass members who do not have a Chase-issued eligible membership can visit a Chase Sapphire Lounge once per calendar year across the U.S. Sapphire Lounge network. After that, additional visits and guest visits cost $75 per person, per visit.

That rule applies across the Chase Sapphire Lounge network as a whole, not once per individual lounge. So if you use your one eligible visit at JFK, you don’t get another free one at Boston later in the same year.

If you have multiple Priority Pass memberships from different cards, it may be possible to use another eligible membership for a different visit. Just make sure you know which one you’re presenting, because the rules follow the membership, not just the lounge.

Chase Sapphire Lounge Locations

There are currently Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club locations in:

Coming Soon

  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Etihad Lounge At Washington Dulles Airport (IAD)

In addition to its own Sapphire Lounges, eligible cardholders also have access to the Etihad Lounge at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

To enter, you must:

  • Show your activated Priority Pass membership linked to your Chase card
  • Present a valid same-day boarding pass

This remains a nice extra benefit, especially since it expands the value of Chase lounge access beyond just the Sapphire-branded locations.

Final Thought

As Chase continues expanding its Sapphire Lounge network, knowing the access rules matters more than ever. This isn’t quite as simple as assuming any premium Chase card gets you and your whole group through the door.

The process is easier than it used to be, thanks to automatic Priority Pass enrollment and digital membership cards in the Chase app. But the details still matter. You need to know which membership you’re using, whether it’s Chase-issued, how many guests your card actually covers, and whether you’ve already used your one annual Sapphire Lounge visit if you’re relying on a non-Chase Priority Pass membership.

And if you’ve been counting on the Ritz-Carlton Card’s old unlimited guest policy, that’s the biggest reason to double-check the fine print before your next trip.
