Over the years, I’ve learned to appreciate the Free Night Reward from the Hilton Honors American Express cards. It’s one of the most valuable free night certificates out there—far more flexible than what most hotel programs offer.
You can use it almost any night of the week, at nearly any Hilton property worldwide (with a few exclusions). It covers taxes and resort fees, and you can even combine it with other stays to extend your trip.
Pretty great, right?
How to Earn a Free Night Reward
There are a few different ways to earn Hilton Free Night Rewards, depending on which card you have.
With the Hilton Surpass AMEX, you’ll earn a Free Night Reward after spending $15,000 in a calendar year.
The Hilton Aspire Card is even more generous. It comes with one Free Night Reward each year automatically, and you can earn up to two more based on spending:
- 1st Free Night – Automatically issued each year
- 2nd Free Night – After $30,000 in calendar year spend
- 3rd Free Night – After $60,000 in calendar year spend
Hilton also occasionally includes Free Night Rewards as part of limited-time welcome offers on its co-branded cards. Those offers come and go, so it’s worth checking current promotions if you’re considering applying.
The Major Drawback
If there’s one thing that still drives me crazy about Hilton Honors, it’s this:
You still have to call to redeem a Free Night Reward.
In a world where you can book flights, hotels, and entire vacations online in minutes, Hilton still requires you to pick up the phone—like it’s 1999.
To Hilton’s credit, you can now at least see your Free Night Rewards and expiration dates in your account. But when it comes time to actually use one? You’re calling in.

Calling Hilton to Book
We recently used a Free Night Reward and were reminded just how outdated this process feels.
After confirming that a Standard Room Reward was available (this is key—certificates only work on standard rooms), we called Hilton at 1-800-446-6677.
From there, the process looked something like this:
- Explain that we want to use a Free Night Reward
- Have the agent look up the hotel
- Wait while they check availability (which we had already done)
- Confirm bed type (one bed or two)
- Wait again while they “confirm with the hotel.”
I still don’t understand that last step. If the room shows as available online, why does it need a second confirmation?
After finally booking the free night, we wanted to add an additional night to the stay. Instead of going through the agent, we just booked that part ourselves online.
At the end of the call, we were also offered the chance to speak with Hilton Vacations (their timeshare division) in exchange for 500 points. For what amounts to about $2–$3 in value, we passed.
Total time on the phone: 16 minutes.
Time to book the extra night online: 3 minutes.
Why Deal With This?
Despite all this, I still love Hilton’s Free Night Rewards.
They’re incredibly flexible, can be used at some very expensive properties, and often deliver outsized value—especially compared to other hotel programs.
In fact, Hilton has quietly made them even more useful by expanding where they can be used, including at many Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties that are now part of Hilton’s portfolio.
That’s what makes the current booking process so frustrating.
This is such an easy fix. Let us book Free Night Rewards online, just like standard award stays. It would remove unnecessary friction from what is otherwise one of the best benefits in the points-and-miles world.

Final Thoughts
Hilton Free Night Rewards remain one of the most valuable perks you can earn from a hotel credit card. But the redemption process feels like it’s stuck in another era.
It’s not a dealbreaker—but it’s definitely something Hilton could (and should) fix.
