Airline stopover programs have been around for decades.
Icelandair was one of the pioneers of the concept, using Iceland’s rather convenient location between North America and Europe to encourage passengers to stop for a few days on their way across the Atlantic.
It was a pretty ingenious idea: if you’re going to connect in our country anyway, why not stick around for a while and spend some money while you’re here?
Since then, plenty of other airlines and countries have gotten in on the act.
Some stopover programs simply allow passengers to spend a few days in the airline’s home city without paying more for their airfare.
Others sweeten the pot.
Turkish Airlines offers eligible passengers complimentary hotel stays in Istanbul. Qatar Airways’ Discover Qatar stopover program offers deeply discounted hotel packages. And Air France’s new stopover program can turn a Paris stopover into a full-blown mini-vacation.
But Qatar Airways has a new incentive for certain passengers this November.
And if you’re a Formula One fan, it’s a pretty darn good one.
Stop In Doha, Get An F1 Ticket
The Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2026 is scheduled for November 27 through 29 at Lusail International Circuit, just outside Doha.
And Qatar Airways, which has its name right there in the official race title, is adding three-day Formula One tickets to select stopover packages during the race weekend.
Passengers booking eligible Qatar Airways flights and a Discover Qatar stopover that includes the race dates can receive a three-day ticket for the T16 Grandstand as part of the package.
And we’re not talking about a ticket to wander around for an hour and look at race cars.
It’s for all three days of the event.
The F1 ticket will be available with the usual Standard, Premium, Luxury and Premium Beach stopover categories.
According to Qatar Airways:
“Packages continue to include flexible 24-hour hotel check-in and check-out benefits and can be further customized with additional experiences such as city tours, beach club access and destination experiences across Qatar.”
The airline also explains exactly how to get the F1 tickets:
“To book the new Stopover packages, customers need to make sure their search dates fall between 27 to 29 November 2026. After selecting their flights and preferred hotels, the three-day race ticket will be included in their package.”
In other words, if your Qatar Airways travel happens to take you through Doha during race weekend, this could be one heck of a time to turn that connection into a stopover.
And Those F1 Tickets Aren’t Cheap
Formula One isn’t exactly known for being an inexpensive spectator sport.
The Qatar Grand Prix takes place on the 5.4-kilometer (about 3.4-mile) Lusail International Circuit near Doha. The 2026 Formula One grid consists of 11 teams and 22 drivers.
Tickets for the weekend can cost hundreds of dollars, depending on where you sit, and popular seating areas can sell out well before race weekend.
Which makes including a three-day grandstand ticket with a stopover package a pretty substantial perk.
Qatar Airways has used its Formula One sponsorship for promotions before. There have been tickets offered as prizes, along with various promotions and discounts for members of its loyalty program.
But putting an F1 ticket directly into a stopover package?
That’s a new one for 2026.
Not A Bad Reason To Stick Around
Stopover programs are designed to convince connecting passengers to spend some time (and, let’s face it, some money) in a place they otherwise might have only seen through an airport window.
Discounted hotels can certainly help accomplish that.
But if you’re already an F1 fan and Qatar Airways is willing to throw a three-day Grand Prix ticket into the deal?
Suddenly that connection in Doha could become one of the main reasons for taking the trip.
And even if watching extremely fast cars go around a track isn’t your thing, I have to give Qatar Airways credit for coming up with a stopover perk that’s a heck of a lot more interesting than free breakfast. 😉
