If you’re a travel geek (or even if you aren’t), I’m sure you’ve heard of the mile high club. Wikipedia describes it as, “…is slang for the group of people who have had sexual intercourse on board an aircraft in flight. An alleged explanation for wanting to perform the act is the supposed vibration of the plane.”
I don’t know what you think, but as a non-member of the club, that last sentence was a little bit TMI for me.
Anyway, we’ve covered the mile high club a couple of times. There was the couple who were caught on video as they were joining it (while still in their seats). And, of course, there’s the airline that’s especially made for people who want to be members of the mile high club.
No one really knows how many people have joined the mile high club. I mean, it’s not Pew Research has ever done a study on it. And, due to the subject matter, who knows how many people would actually tell the truth? Informal surveys (I’m calling them that because there’s limited information about them) suggest it’s somewhere around 9% of men and 2% of women (as per cheapflights.com), or 15% of people (says Jetsetter, via Travel & Leisure), who have flown have joined the mile high club.
Of course, it’s not just regular ol’ people who join the mile high club. Several celebrities have, too…or at least say they have:
Christina Aguilara & Matthew Rutler
In an interview, the former Mouseketeer admitted what she’s done in planes…apparently more than once.
“We’ve definitely hidden some things under the blankets when the seats are big enough.
“I can’t believe we didn’t get caught so many times in so many situations. Thank the Lord.
“On international flights, I turn the light off. There’s always room to get creative. I use blankets.
“It’s like, ‘Oh, I feel safe with my partner here, like we’re just sleeping together’.
“You’ve got to wait til everyone’s like gone to sleep. It’s setting the mood.”
Sir Richard Branson
Branson admitted his entry into the club was decades ago.
He told GQ magazine: “I was sitting in economy on a Freddie Laker flight, next to this very attractive lady, as we headed to LA.
“We got chatting and it went a bit further. And it was every man’s dream, to be honest. I was about 19, I think.
“I remember getting off the plane and she turned to me and said, ‘Look, it’s slightly embarrassing but I am meeting my husband at arrivals, would you mind holding back a bit…’. But it was a memorable flight.
“The problem with plane loos generally is that they are very small, and the acrobatics can’t take too long because there’s no room and people start banging on the door.
“What I remember vividly is seeing four hand prints on the mirror as we finished, and thinking I’d better wipe them off.”
Chris Brown
In 2013, while visiting 106 and Park, singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, and actor Chris Brown said he joined the club.
“I’m not trying to be nasty,” Brown said. “I was on a commercial flight in First Class. It was like one of them European First Classes where you’ve got the big front, so you can put the cover up so don’t nobody see nothing.”
Carmen Electra & Dave Navarro
The Playboy model and Baywatch actress and the Red Hot Chili Pepper guitarist joined the club at the same time, after they devised a plan.
Electra said, “We worked it out that I would go in first, and Dave would come along after and give a secret knock. Then I let him in and, well, the rest is history.
“It was more fun than you would think. It was very adventurous.”
Ralph Fiennes
The English actor, film producer, and director says that he managed to have sex with a Qantas flight attendant he’d just met during a flight from Darwin to Bombay back in 2007.
The 38-year-old Australian cabin crew member lost her job when she was caught coming out of the lavatory after Fiennes. She told The Daily Mail, “It’s true. We did make love on the plane that night. At first I denied it because I was so desperate to keep my job and I didn’t want to hurt Ralph.
“I know some people will think it’s disgusting. And I’m not proud of what I did – it was inappropriate behaviour. But I don’t regret it. Ralph is gorgeous and the chemistry between us was amazing. What woman wouldn’t want to make love with him?”
Janet Jackson & Jermaine Dupree
When Tyra Banks had her own show, Jackson admitted to her that she is a member of the mile high club. During a segment of 20 Questions, Jackson said that she and rapper Jermaine Dupree did it on a commercial flight, while still in their seats.
Kris Jenner & Bruce Jenner
Keeping Up With the Kardashians matriarch Kris Jenner admitted that one the most embarrassing moment of her life was when she had sex on a plane with her former husband, Bruce Jenner, now known as Caitlyn Jenner. The act itself wasn’t embarrassing but they were apparently later congratulated for it by an impressed (and indiscreet) flight attendant.
“We had sex in the bathroom and we came out and nobody said anything,” Kris Jenner told Cosmopolitan. “At the end of the flight, the flight attendant got on the microphone, ‘Congratulations, Mr and Mrs Jenner! You’ve just joined the mile high club. We’re so proud of you, and we decided to give you a bottle of champagne! Yay!’
“I could not squish down in my seat low enough. I was mortified.”
Kim Kardashian
She never said who she was with, but she admitted to joining the mile high club during a live Question & Answer session with her fans, on her app.
She was asked if she was a member and Kardashian said, “Am I? Yeah.
“But like [a private plane]. I don’t think like a public plane…It would have to be an international flight.
“It was an international, night flight when no one’s like around.”
Khloé Kardashian
Because let’s keep it ALLLL in the family, right?
But yep, Khloé Kardashian says she’s also a member of the club.
She wrote on her app: “Doing it on a private plane is great, especially when there are other passengers on board. It’s part of the thrill. I walked into the bathroom first and then he followed so it wasn’t exactly stealth, haha!!! Everyone obviously knew what was going on and when I walked out, they asked if we had fun.”
Like mother, like daughters???
Miranda Kerr
According to Elle, Australian model Miranda Kerr told British GQ in no uncertain terms what she’s done on a plane.
“Let’s put it this way, I’ve had an orgasm in the air before,” Kerr said. “Alone. And together.”
Tommy Lee & Pamela Anderson
Back in the 90s, it seems that those two got it on EVERYWHERE. Boats. Planes. You name it. There’s undoubtedly a tape of it somewhere…
Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Johnny Depp & Ellen Degeneres
No, not all of them together! But watch, starting at 0:56:
Jennifer Aniston, Jane Fonda, Ted Turner & Diane Keaton
On other episodes of Ellen’s shows, these 4 celebrities also apparently revealed that they had joined the mile high club at some point or another, too (Fonda & Turner joined the club on their 4th date – “Suddenly the seats became a bed,” she said).
Zoe Saldana
During an interview with Us Weekly magazine, Saldana was asked to reveal the craziest place she’d gotten steamy. Without missing a beat, she said: “I am part of the Mile High Club.”
Chrissy Teigan & John Legend
She says that she and her musician husband John Legend have joined club. She told Cosmopolitan that they did it in their seats and during a flight to visit her parents.
“We were on our way to Thailand to see my parents, flying commercial first-class. We were under a blanket. We weren’t even in one of those pod things. I feel like we should get a trophy for that.”
Liam Neeson
Neeson says he’s a member of the club, as well. He did it on a Boeing 747.
“I joined the mile high club many years ago. I remember it was on a Lufthansa flight,” he recalled.
John Travolta & Kelly Preston
John Travolta is well known for owning several planes and being an accomplished pilot. However he did more than just planes.
“In my Lear jet days, we joined the club. I shut off the cockpit, let someone else fly.”
Barbra Streisand & James Brolin
This one is heresay and there’s nothing in print to prove anything. But apparently, years ago, Streisand and her husband James Brolin chartered a private jet. It flew over Los Angeles so the two could become legit members of the mile high club.
Reese Witherspoon & Jake Gyllenhaal
After a 2007 trip to the Rome Film Festival, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal were on a flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Los Angeles. They tried remain incognito; they boarded separately and both wore black. The two were cuddling and kissing under a blanket in Lufthansa’s first-class section but Witherspoon eventually got up to use the restroom. Jake followed not long afterwards and the rest is left up to our imagination. But it was said they were in there for 11 minutes.
