New Korean Air Safety Video Marks Industry First

by SharonKurheg

When you’re part of an industry that’s (A) been around for about 100 years and (B) has to remain within certain realms of standards, it’s not super easy to be innovative, at least in the eyes of what passengers might see and experience.

Of course, we’ve all seen individual airlines’ liveries and menus change. Crews’ uniforms sometimes are changed out, as well. And one other thing airlines can “play around with,” if you will, is the safety video.

The information in these videos are, again, standardized. However there’s wiggle room in terms of the way the information is projected. So you’ll see some that are on the more dry (*cough* boring *cough*) side, and others that are significantly more entertaining, with jokes, beauty and celebrities.

Case in point, Korean Air was previously known for its famous dance-centric safety videos that starred the likes of K-pop artists SuperM and BoA. But the airline has apparently decided to refresh its approach. Instead of using actual people, their new inflight safety video stars Rina, who is an AI character.  Here’s the video:

Produced by Metaverse Entertainment, which a unit of Korean game company Netmarble F&C, the five minute-long video features the virtual character, Rina, along with virtual K-pop girl group MAVE. Korean Air says the new video marks the first time hyperreal virtual human characters are being featured in an airline in-flight safety video.

A Korean Air representative said the video will serve as “a great example of the synergy created between the aviation industry and digital technology.” They also added that they “intend to change perceptions of in-flight safety videos with these new ideas, and make them more relatable and engaging for passengers.”

As inflight videos go, it’s admittedly not the most entertaining one we’ve ever seen. But from a technology perspective, I think it’s actually kind of fascinating.

While periodic refreshes of the safety video is expected, they probably wanted to avoid the possibility of another celebrity scandal, as they had to edit out one of the SuperM members
